Story
Fun is the one thing Elsie Webb takes seriously. Though she'd be having a lot more of it if Haelstrom Media paid her enough to actually get out of debt. She's determined to hold out on contract negotiations for her kids' television show Fangley Heights until she gets what she deserves. There's only one problem, the head of the network just died and left her future more uncertain than ever. Forty-eight hours and one funeral—that's all Jones Haelstrom has to get through before she can return to her life in LA that's as ordered and sparse as an IKEA showroom.

Story
When Remy's grandmother dies, it means leaving her life in San Francisco and returning to a town she swore she'd never revisit, forced to confront a world she'd worked hard to put behind her over the last twelve years. She's not expecting that the first girl to ever steal her heart, the pretty, popular Fallon Lewis, is still around, and in a town this small, their paths continue to cross, much to Remy's dismay. It's hard enough seeing her first love, but it's exponentially more difficult when she can barely stand to look at the woman.

Summary
Free-spirited and easygoing Taylor Vandenberg left her hometown of Faircombe, Tennessee, as soon as she could, and in the twenty-five years since, she has rarely looked back. She wouldn't change anything about how her life has turned out—having traveled to nearly every country, never staying anywhere long enough to feel stifled. Very few things can hold her attention back in Faircombe: her sister/best friend, her precocious niece, and perhaps the prospect of riling up Brooke Watson.
Brooke has known Taylor for her entire life, given that her best friend is Taylor's younger brother. And a lifelong knowledge of Taylor means that Brooke knows she's trouble: irresponsible, takes nothing seriously, and irritatingly attractive. Unlike Taylor, Brooke loves their town so much that she's spent her adult life dedicated to making sure it doesn't get swept away like many of the other declining small cities of the American South. Faircombe means the world to her, and she's willing to do just about anything to make sure it flourishes.
Even if it means working with Taylor, whose path seems to continuously be crossing with Brooke's everywhere she turns....

Really wanted to love it
I've loved everything by Haley Cass so far and I was so looking forward to this coming out. However in testing the narrator I was gutted as I just didn't enjoy it, so I didn't buy it. Months later I kept reading the good reviews and thought screw it hopefully the story will make it worth it, but the narration is just so important. All the characters sounded too similar to me where at points specifically between the main two I couldn't tell who was actually speaking. I droned off so many times listening that I forgot what was happening, but felt I had to make it to the end. I honestly do think if it was a narrator I enjoyed the book itself would have been awesome, but unfortunately just not for me.

Great narration, almost a great story
First off, the narration is phenomenal. Absolutely 5 stars there. In terms of the story, there's so much to like: great dialogue, off-the-charts chemistry between the MCs, likeable characters, fun plot. But there is one problem that undermines it all: there is SO MUCH EXPOSITION, 95% of which is totally unnecessary. The worst part about the exposition is that it happens in between every single line of dialogue. Seriously, a character will say one line, then there will be 3-5 paragraphs of exposition where the character remembers things that we the readers already remember, then there's a repetitive description about how something or another is coursing through their body (seriously there are A LOT of emotions constantly coursing through their bodies). Then, FINALLY, the other character will say a line back, and then there are another 3-5 paragraphs explaining in assume-the-reader-is-dumb detail about why that line of dialogue caused more emotions to course through their body as the character remembers more things that we the reader also already remember, and so on. It's like the writer doesn't trust that her writing is really good (and seriously the writing otherwise IS good. The characters, plot and dialogue are all 5 stars.) But instead of trusting that the author spends A LOT of time spelling everything out -- repeatedly -- for us.
Anyway, while I definitely won't read any of the author's other currently-published books (because I assume they have the same flaw), I will keep an eye on her in the future. If she gets a good editor to help her cut the fat and learns to trust her writing more, I imagine she'll write a phenomenal book. This one was close, except for that fatal flaw. Unfortunately based on the many hours of unneeded exposition, I wasn't able to finish the book.
if you're on the fence, I recommend listening to the sample. it shows what I mean about the dialogue-to-exposition ratio. When I listened to the sample I assumed all the exposition was just because it was the start of the book and she was setting the scene. But nope. there's that much exposition between every single line of dialogue throughout the entire book. Kills the flow and the mood.

Solid
I don't know what it is about the books by Ms. Cass that I've read, but I've read three of her books now, and all three are among my favorites in this genre. Her stories don't have exceptionally unique plots (hard to do in the gazillionth romance novel ever published), aren't particularly humorous, which will always catch my eye, and they aren't kinky (which *ahem* catches the attention of other parts), but she seems to do the ordinary with extraordinary flair. Very clean writing style, engaging and realistic emotional intelligence in the narrative, characters that are full humans, not just one aspect of humanity. I find myself unable to stop listening till I get to the end, and feeling satisfied when I get there. The narrator, Ms. Watley, is a new voice for me, but I hope she continues to work in lesfic. She has a pleasing voice and good storytelling instincts.

It Is Long But ……
This is a long slow story but a great one. My first by this author. The narration was perfect for me. Love stories about sleepy little towns where everyone knows everyone.
A romance which developed over years and was very entertaining. I loved how Taylor had a knack for teasing and kidding her very proper younger reluctant love (Brook) into taking a chance on their romance.
There was humor involved but it was a story I finished and felt like going right back and starting it all over.
I listen to many audible books and have to rate this one as a favorite. Use a credit and stick with the story it’s well worth it.

Good Story Telling!
I forgot that I actually read the book awhile back so this would be my second reading. All in all, a great story. Just a tad slow paced. Forever and A Day and Those Who Wait by the same author I can honestly say are a bit better. Recommend.
