About this listen

Six months after the sudden death of her husband, Leonora Galloway sets out on a trip to France with her daughter Penelope. At last the time has come when secrets can be shared and explanations begin....

Leonora takes her daughter to the battlefields of WW1, where her father is commemorated on the Thiepval Monument. But the date of his death is surprising and reveals that Captain John Hallows cannot possibly have been Leonora's real father.

This is only the start of a series of revelations that span three generations of a distinguished aristocratic family who are not what they seem. Penelope must piece together a tale of war, of loss, of greed, deception and vice - and the perpetrator of a murder left unsolved for more than half a century....

A perfect whodunit brilliantly read

I read this book when it first came out in the late 1980's, and have loved Robert Goddard ever since. The book is a mystery that pans a sixty year time frame as recollection of a murder from people with different perspectives trying to unravel the truth.
Even having read the book, the mystery unfolds in a thoroughly entertaining manner that was never dull and did not prompt my memory to remember the various twists.
Jilly Bond is a very British actress who rarely gives a bad theatrical, television or film performance. She reads this book with energy and a complete mastery of accents for the numerous characters,

My view , spoiled by the narrator.

Good story spoiled by the narrator, it needed a man, so not something I would listen to again.

If you like Goddard...

This is a typical book of his.
Characters you want to root for and lots of twists and turns.
Narrator copes admirably with a lot of different voices and not once was I lost on who was speaking in the first person.
Very much enjoyed it. Stands up well at 1.4x speed!!

Very moving

An excellent story very well read. Lots of twists and turns. I looked at how long was left several times and was surprised that there was still so much more. It was very moving especially the parts in the cemeteries of France and this story of individuals brought home the reality of the sacrifices made by the young men in that dreadful war.

Satisfying long tale with unexpected turns

I’ve listened to a number of Goddard’s books and this is definitely one of the best; nice interlocking narratives develop into a satisfying multi-generational picture of complex lives blighted by war, and more acutely by a single malicious actor and all that follows.

Twists and turns

Great writing it must be said.. I enjoy Godards books now and again just for the use of language.. but you do feel like throttling the characters for not just getting a grip but it wouldn’t be a Godard book without it I suppose, captures the higher socialite era very well

Narrator was outstanding

Good story

This is a very good story but the narration is very annoying with over emphasised voices
