Summary

On assignment in Vienna, photographer Ian Jarrett falls suddenly and desperately in love with a woman he meets by pure chance, Marian Esguard. Back in England, he separates from his wife and goes to meet Marian at an agreed rendezvous, only to hear her tell him on the telephone that she will not, after all, be coming. Then she vanishes from his life as mysteriously as she entered it.

Who and where is the woman he met and fell in love with in Vienna?

What a duo!

There are some combinations of author/narrator which are just perfect. This is one of them. So much emotion expressed through the writing and telling.

Brilliant read of a great story

I always enjoy Michael Kitchen’s understated style. He is very easy to listen to. This was also a gripping story with lots of plot twists. I thoroughly recommend it.

Got better after a confusing start

For those of you like me that feel like giving up, hang on in there. I very nearly returned this as I was finding it a very difficult read. It seemed a lot of farcical nonsense at first. The only thing that kept me going was the fact that I really couldn’t imagine Michael Kitchen giving his name to something so bad. It did improve with lots of twists and turns. Very different to anything I have read before. I did in fact enjoy it despite my reservations

Not what I expected

Well, this is the second Robert Goddard novel I've listened to now, read by the excellent Michael Kitchen. Goddard obviously has an interest in the spiritual world, as is evident in the two books I've listened to. I have wondered sometimes if Michael Kitchen felt just a little embarrassed when reading certain lines (I don't think dialogue is Goddard's strength), however, as an actor he has the ability to transport the listener into a make-believe world. This particular make-believe world sometimes verges on the Mills and Boon but is entertaining nonetheless simply listening to the narrator tell the story.

Excellent reading of a well crafted story

One of the best Audible books I have heard. A sensitive reading of a story that maintains a focus on the photographic core.

Loved it

Think this is the 5th book of Robert Goddard’s that I have read and I couldn’t put it down. Very impressed. All the books follow a similar format e.g there will always be a rather insipid character that can’t make his/her mind up but overall the stories are good with lots of twists. This is well worth a read/listen
