Critic reviews

"Written in clear, resonant prose, Goddard's first novel, nominated for the Booker prize, is a poised telling of a complex tale....In one sense a historical thriller, and in another a romantic novel of a love affair gone disastrously wrong, this is, in any case, a wonderful read." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Psychological drama and intricate plot will entice readers." ( Library Journal)

Spectacular !!!

More twist than spaghetti junction, a must for armchair detectives. I found myself constantly changing my mind as regard to motive, opportunity and fore guessing where the story would take me, needless to say that I was wrong on all counts. My first Goddard, and certainly not my last.

Even better the second time

Goddard at his very best. Multiple stories intertwined with subtlety. Read very well with excellent characterisation.

Past Caring by Robert Goddard

Excellent in every way. Slightly slow building up the story, but once established held attention with many surprising developments. Politics, intrigue, deceit, betrayal and love lasting a lifetime woven together in the search for truth. Many twists along the way. Narration perfect for the story. Seemed to go quickly and was disappointed when it ended.
Thank you.

Most Enjoyable

I was slightly apprehensive about undertaking this 19hrs 37mins story but I needn't have worried - it was excellent in all respects! I've listened to many of Mr Goddard's audio books and this is up there with the best of them. Fine narration too.

A gripping tale

Totally believable story of political intrigue and corruption on many levels. Thank heavens there are a couple of higher minds

An erudite mystery

Plot wise, this is a 5 star mystery...not a thriller per se, more of a gradual burner, which builds in sophistication, complexity and urgency. Goddard always plays fair - the characters stay in character, and the inevitable coincidences are believable. The ending is very satisfying and well brought together.
The main characters of Edwin Stafford and his love Elizabeth are beautifully drawn. As an aside, I was able to answer last week's University Challenge's question on who was Prime Minister after Campbell-Bannerman (Asquith)....this came as a bit of a shock to my co-viewers who have me down as a history dunce (and not without reason).

The reason for the 4* rather than a 5* review is because some of the supporting characters are simplistically either good or evil, and are not developed in any level of sophistication, sympathy or understanding - there are too many
'blazing eyes' from various personalities either in passion or in anger. Apart from these lapses, it's a good read.

By the way, it is beautifully narrated by Paul Shelley.

Excellent!

A good plot and unusual story with likeable characters and enough pace to keep you listening. The narrator was excellent, a fine tone & good enunciation.

Great story, not so great narration.

I enjoyed the plot but on occasion found hard to understand who was saying what as the narrator did not make it clear who he was reading.
