Summary

Cars won’t start, and the phones aren’t working. Outside, a winter storm is raging.

Deep into the coldest, Midwest winter on record, an electromagnetic pulse has taken out the nation’s power grid, plunging St. Louis into frigid darkness.

Can ordinary people survive the apocalypse? Pre-med student Raine Caldwell is about to find out.

The government isn’t coming to rescue her. If Raine and her group are going to make it, they must save themselves.

When things go from bad to worse, they must act quickly to seek refuge from the cold and violent city. The group is tested far beyond anything they could imagine, as they begin to settle in, and survive life without modern conveniences.

After finding themselves in a community terrorized by ruthless and dangerous people, Raine and the others in her group must pull together to find justice, when one of their own is taken.

Can they pull the community together, or will it be torn further apart?

refreshing take for the genre

this series has been a refreshing take for the green refreshing of PA fiction. where not everyone has military training, or tons of supplies. a very stark reality check compared to a lot of other series in the genre that focus on previous military or law enforcement people who basically shoot their way across the countryside or have years of supplies set back with solar and everything setup for themselves. This series seemed to be more realistic for the millions of people in cities inside the US where few would be prepared for even the shortest obstruction to their daily lives, let alone a long term grid down issue.

realistic

I enjoyed this series. I see the negative comments about "idiots" in an apocalypse. well, hate to break it to you but this his how 99% of people will most likely react. many won't be prepared, have former training skills or know much about survival. not everyone is an ex veteran with a bunker and a farm filled with food. many will die within the first few weeks, sadly. take this series as a warning and prepare, learn a new skill because you never know when SHTF..

Excellent Dystopian Dystology

I loved all four books in this Dystopian series by TL Payne. It did such a good job of tackling what might happen to a group of people following an EMP attack. I really appreciated that it didn't try to take on too much or too broad a geographic area. When covering the horrors of what might happen, it didn't go into unnecessary details, which is important to me as I could still recommend this series to upper middle school students. I would rate it okay for 13 and older. The main characters were very well developed. The performance was amazing. Such a great find.

realistic and entertaining

I am an avid post apocalyptic fan and a lot of them struggle to be realistic and entertaining but this series nailed it I hope TL will keep writing just like this

Not the authors best work

The story and narrator could not hold my attention. Was not entertained nor informed. Don’t waste you $$$ on this one.

Thoughtful

I like these types of books and most of the time the main character is an instant hero. When this wasn’t true for Rain I was put off. Then I realized this was how most of us would be, scared and just not believing what was happening. Yes things happened almost magically but in real survival that is sometimes the way it happens. I have experience that in my life.

Very slow

I slept off and on and never seemed to miss anything. If you want PG, mostly G, rated storytelling, this is for you. If you want fast paced intricate plot, this is not for you. Lead female character was dumb and dumber. Other characters stayed fairly true to their casting. Author should have made JJ the lead female and left Rain out of story.

Not a fan

If you love contemplation and introspection, this book is for you. The writing was okay, the narration was good but the storyline was bad. It took willpower to finish it.
