Summary
When Gail Zigman, town selectwoman and Joe Gunther's companion of many years, is raped, Gunther finds himself caught between the media, local politicians, and a network of well-meaning victims' rights advocates as he tries to put his own feelings aside and follow a trail of evidence. Every lead points to a single obvious suspect, but is the evidence too perfect?
Risking his friendship with Gail, the respect of his peers, and his own life, Lieutenant Gunther keeps digging, hoping to find out if the man they have in jail is rightly there or if the evidence against him is tainted—what police call "fruits of the poisonous tree".

Marvellous!!!
Enjoyed it!!! Marvelous Plot with major twist along the way, culmulating in a daredevil ending.

Best so far.
For me, these just keep getting better. I still don’t listen to the authors notes at the beginning and there was still an abrupt ending but this time it was apt.

Thoroughly enjoyed!
I am listening to the Joe Gunther stories in order. I have enjoyed them all but I particularly enjoyed this one. The characters are great and Tom Taylorson's narration is really good.

A change from a murder
Once again I enjoyed this 5th book in the series. As always, the author keeps you guessing as to who the culprit is and it isn't usually obvious. Once again, it has an abrupt ending. Great narration.

Thought provoking
There is an obvious weakness in the story which stops a top rating - smell

Another good story
I am listening to the series in order and really enjoyed this book. The reading is great and I like Joe - and Gail - but they are characters of their time (30 years ago). I agree with one other reviewer that Gail needs a bit of a “boost” as her character seems a bit meh by today’s standards.
Overall the series is really enjoyable and I look forward to spending more time travelling back in time to rural Vermont and trying to solve the puzzles. Thank you Archer Mayor.

another brilliant book
having listened to many crime novels and in this series of novels I find story's are gripping and you also find yourself trying to solve the crimes yourself ,in which that makes you want to listen so much more ,if you find this series of books I highly recommend them ,, myself being dyslexic ,I would find it hard to read but thank God for this platform and thank you to the author brilliant work ,,

Almost but not quite
After a great start for me it became a bit bogged down in the tedious action sequences. While the author handled the start of the story very well dealing with such a difficult issue in a very thoughtful and sensitive manner. For me it became a bit lost after Joe, once more, ended up in a life threatening hospitalisation! He really needs to watch out how much damage he inflicts on Joe and how easily he keeps being overcome. Spending much of the story on chasing a red herring to then wrap it up in an instant felt a bit odd. To summarise, a book of two half’s one very good and one not so good. As alway the narration was excellent.
