Summary

Every family has its secrets, and at Hedgehog Hollow there is no exception....

It was always Samantha's dream to run her beautiful rescue centre, Hedgehog Hollow, full-time. But just as her wish comes true, she becomes a victim of her own kindness when she finds herself with a house full of guests - all with their own problems and secrets - looking to her for support.

When her self-absorbed cousin, Chloe, unexpectedly turns up at the farm - swiftly handing over her baby to Samantha to care for - trouble is definitely brewing. Especially as Chloe won’t tell anyone why she’s left her husband, James....

As Samantha juggles new hedgehog arrivals, family dramas and her own health challenges, it soon becomes clear that she needs to start putting herself first for once. Little does she know that life-changing secrets from the past are about to unravel and turn their lives upside down....

FRUSTRATING

This is the third in a trilogy of novels about HEDGEHOG HOLLOW and protagonist, Samantha. I know this is not a social commentary, just light hearted chicklit, and I probably spent far too much time analyzing this, but there were several times when I wanted to discard this book out of sheer frustration. I did like the basic story, getting to know the main character and her journey in acquiring Hedgehog Hollow, but the protagonist's tolerance for the behavior of some of the people in her life was beyond my understanding. She is either the most magnanimous personality that has ever been given life to in a book, or the most thick skinned. There are several really unlovable characters who truly are only enabled in their selfish, manipulatuve behavior because no one will tell them to be "grow up", or stop listening to their spiteful tantrums. It really does almost spoil the story because one doesn't see the desired character growth.

Alhough I didn't warm to the narrators voice and style initially, the consistency of using her to read these three stories turned out well, apart from some of the male voices, whose thick Yorkshire brogue doesn't make them sound their ages. But the stories, written in the first person, are competently read and it's refreshing when the books introduce another narrator for a secondary character.

I never write reviews so this set of books must have touched me in someway. I do recommend them, and other Jessica Redland novels. Gentle reading with some bad language used in context, and gentle romance. However, be aware that you might want to listen when you're alone as you're likely to start shouting at your phone when Sam seems to be just too nice all the time. Take a listen and see what I mean.

Absolutely.....

loved every second of listening to this book with all the old characters and some new ones. Hopefully there will be a new book that will continue with what happens at Hedgehog Hollow and not too far into the future, basically i can't wait to listen to the next book because I love them that much. The narrators were very good with their different voices.

Brilliant

I’ve loved the Jessica Redland books and looking forward to the next instalment.
My only slight criticism is the lack of male narrating in this book as I enjoyed the voice of Josh in the previous book.

3rd book not quite so good

I have listened to all three books now. The first two where great but the third one deviated a bit, a lot less about hedgehogs and Sam and a lot more about Chloes past which wasn't the most interesting and covered a lot of sensitive subjects. Not really the ending book I'd expected or hoped for.
Jessica is a great author though and will be giving her other books a try.

Too much Chloe

It took a good portion of the book before I had much empathy for Chloe. She really isn't a very nice person. I get that she has some sadness in her backstory, but she is so generally self destructive and mean that my patience ran out way too often. I don't like her. A few sandwiches and a blood test didn't redeem her adult behavior in my eyes.

Might be tough

This installment focuses more on Chloe and the things she has been through in her life. Hearing her inner monologues doesn't make her any more appealing to the readers. She's an annoying character, a big brat. But, this book is meant to explain that. I honestly think the build up to it was a little unnecessary but I suppose some people really are that way.

You constantly keep hoping that Sam will get her happy ending without the toxic people around her constantly jumping into her life and ruining it. You hope she keeps a positive outlook on life despite how often outside things pop up to destroy everything she is trying to do. You hope you don't see Sam break while at the same time you know, its coming.

One thing I will say is that I do like that the author has Sam stay true to her core values; even when it drives me crazy that she does. She doesn't allow Sam to become bitter because of the people and situations around her. Sam stays true to herself and begins to learn how to protect her peace, even if she does kinda fail at that lol.

Chloe? Chloe is Chloe.

Ongoing saga

Interesting and relevant how family struggles are often found in successive generations. A happy ending cannot always be expected. My only reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars for performance is due to my dissatisfaction with the narrator choice for the main character. She sounds like a much older woman.

The all Chloe show

I am a fan of Redlands books and have read or listened to nearly all of her series. This one was a little difficult to get through. I would have preferred Emma and Lucy switch roles as their voices are better suited for the opposite character (opinion).
Spoiler alert: I couldn’t find any reason to support Chloe as she was so horrible through this series. Even when history/circumstances were all wrapped up in a bow, I could not root for her. With only one book in the series left, I would have preferred the third book introduce new characters or just skip it all together.
Overall, as with her others, these are easy to listen to, this one was just hard on the ears, didn’t make me laugh or cry, just filled in a few holes.

Chloe, Chloe, Chloe

Someone put me out of my misery with that winey stupid Chloe. Too much of her went too far. The jump between narrators really amplified the screeching pitch of Emma’s voice, irritating. It’s a shame she narrates for the nice Sammy, should be for Chloe. Love the Hedgehogs though.

great, but...

I love this series, I love the character development and the details of the landscape as well as different little things that describe what the characters are doing, evem durring the dialog. However it eneded on a cliffhanger. I hate that because by the time the next book comes out, I will either have forgotten the story or forget about purchasing or both. The narrator did a great job at swithcing up voices, tone, flucuation, etc. I have really enjoyed her.
