Summary

Brooks Johnson’s words to live by:

When returning to Licking Thicket, TN, for the first time in 10 years to reunite with your nosy neighbors, heartbroken ex-girlfriend, and matchmaking mama who never quite believed you were gay, it’s best to bring a fake boyfriend as backup.

Just don’t be surprised when your ex-girlfriend does the same. And when her incredibly hot fake boyfriend becomes the one island of calm in a sea of bovine-based insanity, it’s best to exercise caution, especially when he pushes you up against the rough barn wall to check you very thoroughly for splinters.

Just don’t be surprised if you fall head-over-hooves in love with him.

Heartwarming fun

This has to be the most fun romance I’ve listened to in I think forever. Who could not laugh and smile at a romance that involves a small town called Licking Thicket. Then add a few fake relationships and a couple who are ex’s and it’s impossible not to enjoy the small town feeling. The family relationship makes it more entertaining. The characters are all lovable. The different situations make it hard not to laugh out loud so be mindful where you read it. This is one of those stories that warms my heart. Michael Dean gets congratulations on being able to narrate this story without laughing. He really brought the story to life. Now I have to read more in this series.

Just glorious....

Firstly, I want to say a big thank you for the two authors Lucy Lennox and May Archer. Ladies this book is like love and hope and family and friendship all wrapped up in sunshine and rainbows....
I defy anyone to not feel great after they have read this story, even more if they had the pleasure of listening to it from Michael Dean's voice. It is funny and warm and a real feel good story. I loved it all.

So many frustrating things

This book would have been heading towards a typical 3 star ok read which is what I usually give Lucy Lennox stories, with their small town characters and slightly cringeworthy humour. She seems to have a loyal following that leave over inflated positive reviews so it’s always difficult to really gauge how good a book of hers is.

However, this book had too many annoying things. Firstly, Ava. She was petty and shallow, and we were supposed to like her? The only “redeeming” feature the authors gave was that she was pretty. Paul is portrayed as overwhelmed by her beauty, and her liking being adored by him despite his “thinning hair”. Eughh. Actually, all the female characters weren’t likeable.

The whole premise seemed a bit awkward and unnecessary, and the drama of faking didn’t seem to be enough to base a story on.

Finally the drama at the end and Mal’s freak out, the things he said, and his decisions were just ridiculous. It’s like the authors just didn’t know how to make the ups and downs in this book. How it got resolved just didn’t work for me either. No grovelling.

The narrator isn’t ever my favourite. Nasal voice and annoying laugh, and awkward sounding humour.

This book left me with a curled lip and resentment that I wasted so many hours on it.
