Summary

When the body of a girl turns up in an affluent East Lothian town, the main suspect is a teen with a history of run-ins with the police. Frustrating

This is the second book in this series I have listened to, and overall I have really enjoyed them. The narrator is good, but I find it difficult to believe that even at the time the books are set that there is an inspector that would behave like Inspector Bain. He should be fired!

Not the best

I like Ed James books but am struggling with this particular series. Not fond of the narrator. Story was so predictable. Please why does not every Christian character in a book have to be a fanatic or a pedophile. How do any crimes get solved with so much backbiting and aggression in the police force? I don’t know whether or not to make the effort to read the next in the series.

Quite poor

I didn’t enjoy this story though I did manage to listen until the end, which was a bit of a struggle. I found the constant aggressive bickering between police ridiculous (that’s putting it mildly). Yes, I do realise Jamie Cook was the main missing protagonist but good Lord did he have to be mentioned in virtually every breath. Not my type of story. Although I have listened to Ed James previously I don’t think I’ll be doing it again

Was a struggle

The constant arguing & whinging between all members of that police force is off-putting and boring. The story was ok but was obvious from the start who did it. I cant warm to any of these moany characters.

I really struggled with the narrator. I have some hearing difficulties and struggle with lower tones. Ive never struggled hearing an audio book until now. Unfortunately this narrators voice was the perfect pitch for me to not hear properly

Griity & believable

I wasn't keen on the narration at first but got into the dramatic, breathy style by a couple of chapters in. Good story, believable characters. Enjoyed the subtle humour. Looking forwards to the next in the series

Great intro to this series

I enjoyed this book and audiobook, even better that it was set in East Lothian. Good plot and characterization. The only downside is that not all the series is available in audiobook form. Good narration

Good and bad

Mixed opinions on this. The story is good enough but behaviour of the DI and the attitude towards his team is unbelievable and in real life he wouldn't have a job.
The narrator still makes the female characters sound like they're about to burst into tears but is marginally better than the previous book.

the really bad performance of the reader

I like this author and his stories are good, but this audiobook was completely spoiled by the reader. His intonation was very odd, the volume dropping down through the sentence, so that I could hardly hear the ending of the sentences even though I had the volume up high. this did not occur when he was reading the conversations - a strange style.
