Outstanding tale of betrayal and murder

I'm not sure what some of the reviewers listened to but it was not the same book that I heard, this is an excellent story, sad but excellent, so many twists and turns you'll never guess the truth, it's an outstanding start to what I hope will be a long series, I love this.

Just to add a a little extra intrigue, book 2 is already out and is an absolutely fantastic listen too.

A tad farfetched

Great narration which I think saved this book from bad to ok. The characters was too unbelievable. I so wanted to love it but it actually kept getting on my nerve. Don't think I will listen to sequel

Rhys David > Full Cast Recording

A twisty little story that doesn't ever feel like it withholds any information from you, only a few niggling complaints in regards to the time line and some characters keeping secrets for no particular reason but easy enough to overlook.

Rhys David does a remarkable job once again of bringing every character to life and performing in such a way that makes the prose feel redundant when you can feel so much emotion in the delivery.

Too much personal rubbish

I’m glad I listened to Beachy Head first, by mistake. Had I started this series with this audiobook I should not have continued. Having listened to quite a few novels in between I can’t remember how much personal stuff appears in book two but I’m sure there wasn’t all this novel’s dreary backstory about Barnes and his wretched wife wanting to breed. Having read the author’s blurb and noting he has a superfluity of offspring, I’m not surprised at the desire of the Barnes couple to add to the gross over abundance of humans on this poor planet. Depressing.
The detection element of this novel is interesting and worthwhile if one can ignore the personal life of the main character.
Rhys David is excellent.

A bit long

I enjoyed much of this novel and it’s twists and turns we’re generally unexpected. I’m not so sure about the narrator- at times he seemed to need to have a good cough!!
Yes - I agree with other reviewers….what happened to Forbes?

Disappointing

This book is not a tense crime thriller but rather a tedious and long winded attempt at a crime thriller. The narrator is good but the author isn't. Not recommended.

Not bad

I quite liked this one, something not quite hitting the mark for me. Not sure if I’ll listen to the next one. Very good narration.

A solidly great read..

Well written story that could have been tauter, and more impactful, with less repetition of story's primary tropes. Cumulatively it felt like the writer holds a remarkably low opinion of his readers capacity to grasp the story's essentials. Given, however, all the dialed-in writing that exists in this genre and the high quality of this book's writing if not structure, the book is definitely worth the credit!
