Summary

MEET DETECTIVE RUTHERFORD BARNES IN THIS BRILLIANT CRIME SERIES FROM A SERVING POLICE OFFICER.

An absolutely gripping crime thriller with a massive twist.

For five long years, Detective Barnes has been hunting the killer of the person he cared about the most. Now, the one man who could have revealed the truth is dead. His charred and blackened body is all that remains in his burnt-out flat.

A week later, a desperate, emaciated young woman hammers on the door of a late-night convenience store. She speaks no English—but it’s clear that she’s terrified—and running for her life.

It's only Barnes who connects the two events. He and his new boss, Superintendent Samson Kane, team up to uncover the truth. Their investigations stir up dangerous undercurrents within Eastbourne’s criminal community.

And the two police detectives are vulnerable. Both Barnes and Kane have secrets in their pasts. Secrets which look set to catch up with them . . . with horrifying consequences.

Perfect for fans of Joy Ellis, Helen H. Durrant, Peter James, Angela Marsons and Rachel McLean.

Got there in the end!

I’m not sure if it’s the story or the narration, but the first part of the novel is extremely drawn out and so melancholy I almost gave up.
Barnes can only be described as morose and to be fair, his morbid obsession with his wife’s death dominates the beginning of the tale to such a degree the actual story doesn’t seem to get going. I do recognise that it’s a major factor in the story and in his characterisation but I think it hindered the plot line in the beginning chapters.

That said, the eventual detail, innovative plot and the twists of the story make it an engaging and exciting read.

There are lots of very descriptive passages beautifully creating the scenes around Eastbourne and the atmosphere during different stages of weather, time of day and mood : but I wonder if the author would have wanted them narrated in such a slow, monotone and doom laden voice. The lack of speed in his narration seemed at odds with some uplifting and pretty descriptive pieces.

Ironically, the narrator actually performs some very tricky accents and he turns some hugely complex dialogue into very clear and entertaining voices.

A little humour would be appreciated!

For me the jury is still out on whether I’d go for another Rutherford Barnes novel …,,,,

Like some other readers/listeners I’m struggling to ‘find’ Barnes. Maybe Kane will be his saviour!

Another brilliant instalment!

A couple of new characters that I hope will be series regulars! Rutherford Barns is a cut above, the narration absolutely on point and the ongoing plot arch compelling! Eagerly awaiting the next instalment!!

WOW

I've thoroughly enjoyed all three books but this one was the best so far, it weaves together all of the events of previous books in a most unexpected way, I loved it. My only complaint is that I've finished it ... I certainly hope there will be more Barnes to come.

Compelling story & highly recommend!

I’m an avid listener and this is one of the the best books I’ve listened to for a long time.
Great story with unexpected twists & brilliant narration makes this compelling listening and drew me in very quickly.
The characters are complex but I enjoyed that aspect of the book as it made me wanting to know more about them.
Looking forward to the next book.

Agree with “Got there in the end!”

Mostly boring with a few twists to catch my attention. Think I’m done with Barnes.
