About this listen

Poisoned pooches and a missing teenager bring our detective duo back together in Date with Poison the fourth cosy crime novel in Julia Chapman's Dales Detective Agency series. Perfect for fans of Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club and M.C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin series.

Spring is in the air in the Yorkshire Dales, but not everyone is filled with the joys of the season.

Samson O’Brien of the Dales Detective Agency is being questioned by police about a murder, with the truth about his policing past about to be brutally exposed.

Delilah Metcalfe is busy defending Samson to everyone in Bruncliffe, when her nephew runs away from home and a frantic search begins. And with attention elsewhere, only a local vet is paying attention to a worrying spate of canine poisonings happening throughout the village.

Bruncliffe is turning toxic and with suspicion raining down on him, Samson knows he has to ask Delilah for help. Can she forgive his transgressions and help him so that they can find the missing boy and the poisoner, or has the poison already spread too far?

Full of wit, warmth and characters you'll care about, continue the charming mystery series with Date with Danger.

Critic reviews

"A delightful Dales tale to warm the cockles!" (Peterborough Telegraph)

I've read the preceding books in the series so I now know the characters and what to expect. It's enjoyable, sometimes a little annoying in that the vet doesn't do what any vet would do with an animal that's eaten poison and immediately induce vomiting, but otherwise its quite good.

Enjoyable, if a little implausible

Love this series. The characters are flawed and, hence, lifelike. The setting is close to where I live so is relatable and the humour is dry. If, like me however, you dislike bullying and underhanded spite, and you have high blood pressure it may be best to take medication before listening to this because it could send your blood pressure through the roof! I finished this whilst praying that Samson quickly gets the chance to uncover the culprits and prove who the good guys are.

Brilliant

I absolutely love these books in this series, and this one doesn’t disappoint. Wonderful narration.

Wonderful edition to this series

I loved hearing a bit more of Tolpuddle’s inner life. He really is a hero! However, Delilah disappoints with her poor and hasty judgment. Will carries on being a complete arse, nearly bringing about tragedy. But a very satisfying happy ending.

The longer story arcs both get a bit of ramping up in this book, leaving us on a cliffhanger. I hope they start reach spectacular finales they deserve, but not before TOO long.

EB continues to be an excellent narrator.

A very enjoyable listen with excellent narration. I’m only enjoying each of these more as they go on.

Brilliant story as usual from Julia Chapman. Twists and turns to keep you guessing with a good dose of humor.

I don't normally write reviews but I really enjoyed this book. I'm invested in the characters, they're three dimensional and really grounded in the culture of the Dales. I love the hint of a lovely story, the cynical mean brother dynamic, the retirement home undercover helpers and the way dogs feature so heavily! Highly recommend as a crime drama, not quite as cosy as some other 'cosy crime' but in a classier way.
