About this listen

The close-knit community of a Yorkshire village is rocked when local secrets are revealed in Date with Mystery, the third cosy crime novel in Julia Chapman's Dales Detective series. Perfect for fans of Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club and M.C. Beaton.

The Dales Detective Agency’s latest assignment appears to be an open and shut case. Hired by a local solicitor to find a death certificate for a young woman who died over twenty years ago, Samson O’Brien is about to find out that things in Bruncliffe are rarely that straightforward. Particularly when the solicitor insists that Delilah Metcalfe, with her wealth of local knowledge, works alongside Samson on this sensitive investigation.

Delilah is eager to help, needing to take her mind off the impending custody case for her precious dog Tolpuddle and problems with her dating agency.

As Samson and Delilah begin their inquiries they soon become embroiled in a mystery that has lain at the heart of the town for decades. But in uncovering the truth have they exposed secrets that some would prefer remained buried?

Full of wit, warmth and comforting characters, continue the gripping mystery series with Date with Poison.

East listen

Obvious plot lines - which is annoying - but the characters and coziness keeps the interest up.

Excellent, consistent high quality crime series

The wonderful setting, great characters and well plotted stories make the dales detective agency series a lovely listen. I dislike the term ‘cosy’ when used to described less grisly/gritty crime novels. It often covers extremely silly and irritating novels. This series is described as ‘cosy’ but they avoid twee even though there is the ubiquitous dog. Highly recommend this series.

Good story but read in order

Good read but the only problem is it is a serial. If you do not read in the published it can spoil and confuse.

Loving this Series!!

Really loving this book series! Well written, fun, great characters and a will they/won’t they theme! I was really, really looking forward to finding out where it was all going. Shame the rest of the series after this book is no longer available on the Kindle app which has stopped it being as accessible to as many readers - such a shame for such a fab writer not to be able to be heard more!! I certainly won’t be able to read/hear the rest through my subscription which I’m gutted about!

Easy to get lost in!

I have listened to all three of these books now and find they are constantly improving. They have a good plot, good characterization and beautiful descriptions of the Yorkshire Dales. I must admit, I will be very glad when Samson gets this London business sorted as it is definitely a black cloud hanging over each next installment and I really would like things to move on a bit with Delilah! Well read and easy to listen to. Very much looking forward to the next one.....

Entertaining, but large plot holes

The final solution to the mystery seemed like the most obvious one from the start, but the detective brains working on it didn't evrn consider it till near the end. Also left with a big question mark over how someone close the victim was fooled - just not mentioned. But peopled with characters you care about and with the Dale's backdrop, still worth a listen.
