Great fun
This series gets more and more enjoyable just like the original Others series. Once again Vicky is in trouble and her crowgaurd friends protect her.

Even Predators Have Their Scary Stories
This the 3rd book set in the World Of The Others, which follows on directly from The Others series, which is comprised of 5 books. At the very least you need to read the 2 other books from The World Of The Others before reading this book in order to understand it and it’s preferable to read The Others series first because it establishes the background and history and some of the characters. There is no cliffhanger to this book, but I’m always left wanting more from this world so prepare to be sad at the end that you might be in for a longish wait for the next book in the series to be written and published.
This book revisits Vicki in The Jumble, which is set in Sproing by Lake Silence. The Jumble has been taking paying guests for a few months now and things are going well. Vickie’s role as Reader for the local Terra Indigenes has given her a protected and treasured role in her local community and stories of her antics have travelled much wider. Because of the wide range of Terra Indigenes who make The Jumble their home, Vickie’s resort has received a lot of attention, especially from academics who wish to encounter the Terra Indigenes in a safe(ish) way. For Trickster Night Vickie makes the mistake of telling the Crows about the human tradition of trick or treat and ends up hosting a party filled with academics, tourists and two of Julian’s friends. All the Terra Indigenes throw themselves into using their half-forms to scare the locals, but only a little bit.
On Trickster Night everything is going well until there is a knock on the door from someone no one is expecting, that’s enough to strike terror into even the Terra Indigenes. That knock on the door starts a series of events that quickly spiral into a sequence of murders that no one can unravel.
I love this series so much. The world building is superb and it’s so rare to see this kind of world where the predators are in charge and that’s not a bad thing. The world order is up in the air with no one able to predict how the humans and the Terra Indigene are going to interact and what is going to a positive or negative experience for either group. I love that there are levels of predator with the least scary being the vampires and the shifters, who are the ones with the most contact with the humans and therefore able to understand the humans the most, but even they find the humans quite baffling much of the time.
Vickie is a interesting protagonist because she’s not really bright or a good fighter, she’s not sexy or talented. However, she is kind and determined to do the right thing. She has a moral core and she applies her ethics across species. She makes mistakes, is sometimes foolish, gets lost easily and is completely unable to cook. She loves books and crime shows and shares that love with the Terra Indigene. Her foolish adventures make her antics entertaining to the Terra Indigene but it is her welcoming nature and open hearted embrace of the individuals of The Jumble and Sproing that really have gained her loyalty from the predators that surround her.
The other characters that surround Vickie are probably slightly more predictable as protagonists, with Grimshaw the steely-eyed cop, Ilya Sanguinati, the handsome and ruthless leader of the local Shadow of Vampires and Julian the local bookshop owner who has a psychic gift and a tortured past. The supporting characters are all wonderfully engaging and intriguing and I especially love the Crowguard with their inquisitive ways.
On top of the wonderful world building and fabulous characters the storytelling is fantastic. The author lures you along, page after page, chapter after chapter until you realise you are at 5am and you have a crick in your neck and your eyes are burning. The plot is complicated and intriguing and I relished every minute of it. The exploration of nature of the fear and application of psychological manipulation is particularly intriguing.
The narrator, Alexandra Harris, is the same one utilised for the rest of the series and The Others Series, so if you have listened to her work before this book you have a good idea of what to expect. She does a good job of conveying the nature of characters she narrates and you have few doubts about who is speaking when. The first book in The Other Series I experienced was the audio version and I was hooked by the unique style of narration, which is slightly stylised in a storytelling sing-song tone in parts. It matches the style of writing really well and I think it enhances the experience of the reading the novel. I recommend listening to the audio version of this book and the preceding ones.
This is a fantastic addition to the series and I highly recommend it.

Great characters, suspenseful story set in the intricate world of the Others
Book 3 in the the World of the Others series, I’d recommend reading at least Lake Silence (book 1 of the series) first as that is where many of the main characters here are introduced. Also reading Wild Country (book 2) as well as the original Others series books would help fill in on world building and additional characters.
I love the mix of suspense and sometimes dark humor that plays off the unique world and characters of the Others the author has created. The narrator does a good job creating different voices, and a great job telling the story, to the extent that l often forgot there even was a narrator—which is exactly what I’m looking for. Both the story and the narration ensured I stayed deeply engaged throughout, and I can guarantee this is a story I’ll be listening to again. In fact, I suspect I’ll be going back to start a re-listen of all the books in both series in the near future.

Terrible narration
I'm a huge fan of the others. Read every single book. This is the first I tired to listen to. Narration is HORRIBLE! Can't tell the difference of one character to another. Voice is whiny and annoying. I'll read the book. I'm positive it's not the story it's the narrator that blows it

The narrator is angry ALL THE TIME
A decent story was ruined for me by a narrator (Alexandra Harris) who spits out each word like she's shooting bullets from a machine gun. Everything she says sounds angry. She also mispronounces numerous words and has real trouble creating different voices.
There are so many points of view represented in the book that it isn't always easy to keep track of the sequence of events.
If there is a subsequent book in the Lake Silence series, I'll choose to read it rather than listen to Alexandra Harris again.
