Summary

In this brilliant debut, a psychologist finds herself drawn into the dark world of a serial killer - who may be closer than she thinks. Mulholland Books presents...Crossbones Yard.

Ray and Marie Benson killed 13 women before they were caught, tried and imprisoned. Five of their victims were never found.

Six years later psychologist Alice Quentin discovers a woman's body on the waste ground at Crossbones Yard. The wounds are horrifyingly similar to the Bensons' signature style. But who would want to copy their crimes?

When Alice is called in to consult, her first instinct is to say no. She wants to focus on treating her patients, not analysing the mind of a murderer.

But the body at Crossbones Yard is just the start, and the killer may already be closer than Alice knows.

An OK to start a series

I will listen to the second and see where it goes. Good characters but rather a predictable plot.

Great book

Great story but I just didn’t get the narrator? The part was a 32 year old woman and the narrator sounded at least 50 years old...confusing!

Brilliant

Would you consider the audio edition of Crossbones Yard to be better than the print version?

I rarely buy print books as my eyes aren't too brill so I wouldn't know.

Who was your favorite character and why?

If I told you that it would give away the ending.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

All of it. This is the best book I have listened to for quite a few months. Couldn't put it down - listened to it it all in one go. Gripping.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

London based Thriller with a sting in the tail.

Any additional comments?

I was beginning to get despondent as I had not found any new authors for quite a while - until this came along. Even then I wasn't sure about buying it because of the title, but it had good reviews so I gave it a go. I am so glad I did

Absolutely loved it! I didn't guess the "who did it". Thoroughly enjoyed the story and the speaker.

An absorbing listen

I begun by listening to book 5 in the series, Blood Symmetry and was so taken with the character of Alice Quentin that, upon finishing, I immediately purchased book 1. I was not disappointed as Crossbones Yard is a taut and well crafted book with detailed characters the reader/listener can really get to know and understand. In a million years I would never have guessed who the villain was, but once revealed, it really couldn't have been anyone else. Charlotte Strevens does an excellent job of bringing Ms Rhodes' characters and story to life and I'm excited to listen to the other books in the series.

Decent story ruined by wrong choice of reader

The story and the characters are decent and I'd like to see how they develop. It's not quite the calibre of the early Ben Kitto books by the same author. Those audiobooks have a near perfect pairing between the reader and the text, Charlotte Streffens didn't work for me as Alice. Shes a good narrator in her own right who can do decent male voices and accents but ive heard her read 2 other series where the lead characters are well off middle aged ladies which her voice is perfect for but it was too much a leap for me to listen to the voice of a middle aged chocolatier and middle aged landscape gardener perform a 30 year old London girl in silver sparkly dress who is both tough and very vulnerable. I'd read rather than listen to the next book before making up my mind on the series.
