About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Crimson Lake by Candice Fox, read by Lani Tupu.

*Winner of Best Thriller/Suspense audiobook at the Audies*

From the New York Times bestselling co-author of Never Never
comes an ingenious and edgy suspense novel that will keep you guessing to the very last page . . .

12.46: 13-year-old Claire Bingley stands alone at a bus stop

12.47: Ted Conkaffey parks his car beside her

12.52: The girl is missing . . .Six minutes - that's all it took to ruin Detective Ted Conkaffey's life.

Accused but not convicted of Claire's abduction, he escapes north, to the steamy, croc-infested wetlands of Crimson Lake.

Amanda Pharrell knows what it's like to be public enemy no.1. Maybe it's her murderous past that makes her so good as a private investigator, tracking lost souls in the wilderness. Her latest target, missing author Jake Scully, has a life more shrouded in secrets than her own - so she enlists help from the one person in town more hated than she is: Ted Conkaffey.

But the residents of Crimson Lake are watching the pair's every move. And for Ted, a man already at breaking point, this town is offering no place to hide . . .

Excellent audiobook

This quirky, entertaining, yet thought provoking audiobook is definitely worth a listen. The narrator took me a few chapters to get used to, but he suited the main character well and I found myself totally immersed in the story. I've now finished the second book and am just about to start the third 👍

A surprising and thoroughly enjoyable listening experience. Both the author and narrator are new to me but I shall certainly look forward to the next book.

Fantastic new unlikely duo!

What a great piece of writing, characters you care about and descriptions of this area of Australia. The plot is a great one of wrong doing around the two main characters and of course the geese. . .

Atmospheric

I’ve been enjoying a lot of Australian Crime and Thrillers lately, and this one was particularly good.

Although I find the ‘good man with a dark past’ Detective a little overdone, in this novel it actually feels right, perhaps because the tale of that dark past is fully explained and would work well as a novel in its own right.

The setting is wonderful. After lots of hot, arid, vast open spaces as the settings for the Australian novels I’ve read recently, this was set in a hot, wet, swampy countryside that was just as thoroughly Aussie, but a welcome change. The constant threat of crocodiles was very interesting.

hard going listening

only finished it to find out the convoluted plot finish. Overly flowery descriptions, repetitive, cartoonist characters. eye rolling and skipping through chapters.
