Story
The last time Tess de Vere saw William Benson, she was a law student on work experience. He was a 21-year-old, led from the dock of the Old Bailey to begin a life sentence for murder. He'd said he was innocent. She'd believed him. Sixteen years later Tess overhears a couple of hacks mocking a newcomer to the London Bar, a no-hoper with a murder conviction, running his own show from an old fishmonger's in Spitalfields.

Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Critic reviews
"The dark and gritty latest instalment in the Charles Holborne series deserves every single one of the five stars I didn't hesitate in awarding it. The writing is so vivid and visceral that I can't believe it hasn't been picked up for the small screen. This whole series is the pinnacle of crime thriller writing and I am confident that nothing will ever knock it off its pedestal." (The Book Magnet)

Story and style is very average
A lot of irrelevant waffling without driving the story forward. The story itself is not particularly captivating and the ever repeated underdog and ostracised features of Charles Holborne demonstrate a certain lack of imagination and storytelling on behalf of the author. Quite predictable on almost all levels (eg Patrizia Conti. The love scenes are literally cringe worthy. Very poor.
I enjoyed book 1&2, but 3 and certainly this one got worse (and worse). Should there be a number 5

Perfection
I have loved this whole series - the writer’s clear knowledge and passion for his subject make the whole narrative incredibly compelling. The sort of book which makes you go and Google the places, the people in it to understand further. This is a dark story but completely fascinating, mixing history with fiction seamlessly. The narrator is brilliant - his Ronnie Kray is particularly notable. Never want this series to end!
