Critic reviews

"The dark and gritty latest instalment in the Charles Holborne series deserves every single one of the five stars I didn't hesitate in awarding it. The writing is so vivid and visceral that I can't believe it hasn't been picked up for the small screen. This whole series is the pinnacle of crime thriller writing and I am confident that nothing will ever knock it off its pedestal." (The Book Magnet)

A really good story!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, as I have all of the others so far. Extremely entertaining. So sad the remaining series is not on Audible.

Story and style is very average

A lot of irrelevant waffling without driving the story forward. The story itself is not particularly captivating and the ever repeated underdog and ostracised features of Charles Holborne demonstrate a certain lack of imagination and storytelling on behalf of the author. Quite predictable on almost all levels (eg Patrizia Conti. The love scenes are literally cringe worthy. Very poor.

I enjoyed book 1&2, but 3 and certainly this one got worse (and worse). Should there be a number 5

Totally Hooked

I’m thoroughly enjoying this series and am totally hooked on the life and trials of Charles Holborne scripted by Simon Michael. The narration by Colin Mace is superb and I can’t wait for the rest of the series to become available on Audible. Gutted I will have to find something else to entertain me so well in the meantime.

Brilliant

Colin Mace bought this fantastic book to life with his superb narration. Liked the insight into the legal profession in the 60's and the East End under world. Waiting now for Audio to produce book 5. If you haven't read the first 3 books in the series make sure you get them on your reading list they are all great.

Brilliant series

I have really enjoyed the series of legal/historical thrillers so far and REALLY hope that Audible will soon produce recordings of the remaining books. Simon Michael writes beautifully crafted stories with an unexpected sting in the tail and Colin Mace hits just the right tone in his reading. I can’t wait for the next!!

Perfection

I have loved this whole series - the writer’s clear knowledge and passion for his subject make the whole narrative incredibly compelling. The sort of book which makes you go and Google the places, the people in it to understand further. This is a dark story but completely fascinating, mixing history with fiction seamlessly. The narrator is brilliant - his Ronnie Kray is particularly notable. Never want this series to end!
