Summary

The third instalment in a gripping and atmospheric crime series set on a small island where there is no escape....

Intruders here are bound to die.

As the sun sets on a cold November evening, the tiny community of St Agnes prepares for their annual Fifth-of-November festivities. Moments before the fireworks are scheduled to commence, an islander discovers a charred body left on the bonfire, and quickly it becomes clear that a killer is at large.

Ben Kitto is the Deputy Chief of Police for the Scilly Isles, and with a killer on the loose, he has no choice but to forbid all residents from leaving the island. With a population of just 80 people, everyone is a suspect and no one is safe.

When threats start appearing, written in the old Cornish language, Ben suspects that the killer’s motive is to rid the island of the newcomers who threaten their traditions. With time running out, Ben hurries to discover the secrets of the island’s peculiar residents, but he knows it’s only a matter of time before another fire is started.

No place to run.

No place to hide.

Starting to get just a little repetitive.

This is the third in the series, and having really enjoyed the first, I'm starting to find the stories a little repetitive. That said, the narrator and setting of the books are what draw me to this series, it's hard to find a book you can relax with, so I will stick with it. There is a back story there but it's coming along very slowly, I guess there are a few more books to come in the series.

Enjoyable but a bit repetitive

I’ve read all three books, very pleasant and you feel you get to know the characters. This felt a bit like a Shetland story... I’d like Kitto to solve a murder with his own mind, it does feel like he ‘stumbles’ across what’s happened.. that said enjoyed listening and narrative is great!!

Great series.

Another great story from Kate Rhodes. Although I enjoyed another Ben Kitto case, I was left with the feeling that this story dragged a little and should have finished sooner than it did. That being said, I am definitely looking forward to book 4 when it gets released.

My least favourite of the series.

I really enjoyed the first two books in the series, but this one I found quite irritating because of its guesswork rather than evidence. It just got tedious when the detective had different ideas on the guilt of people because he had a gut feeling. I think maybe the fact that the setting is such a small island with few inhabitants makes a sensible plot more difficult

Gripping who dun it.

As in the other DI Kitto books the narrator is excellent. The story twists and turns, a great listen.

A beautiful place for a crime

Another good read with audiobook and wondering if there will be another in the series . You can feel the atmosphere as you listen to the narrator, whose voice and tone is perfect for the location.

Week characterization

The lead character is less appealing in this book. There are only so many times you can be convinced of something with so little evidence, I probably won't download the next book.

Good not great

A bit of a letdown after the first two in the series, muddled and a bit repetitive - well performed and so an easy listen but perhaps time for Ben Kitto to take an early retirement.

Great narration, repetitive story

I enjoyed the first two books in the series, by really didn’t like this one. The writing has become very repetitive and I found the characterisation weak. I also found the story very luck lustre and the plot just seemed to limp along with little direction. I have bought the next book in the hope it’s better than this one.
