Summary
In hiding all her life, Layala prepares for the day the wicked High Elf King Thane will come to steal her—his powerful mate. She trains to take her revenge for the wrongful execution of her parents, who died for her freedom.
Now that day has come, forcing her to come face-to-face with what she’s hidden from: a dangerous, dark-haired, warrior king determined to marry her.
After she’s shoved into a black carriage pulled by six ominous steeds, Layala makes plans to take her captors’ lives and free herself...
...but Thane has a secret that makes it impossible for Layala to slay him. She has an even darker truth that makes loving her forbidden, no matter how much Thane wants to touch.

Amazing
I absolutely adored this book. Well written, capturing storyline and one of the best female lead characters I've stumbled upon.

Flat narration and rough story
First of all, it was difficult to get into the story just because the narrator was not a great fit in my opinion. It felt like the book was being read by a high schooler out loud in class. Her range for keeping up the voice (which felt incredibly forced even for the main character let alone the male characters) was lacking any emotional variety. Most of the time it’s hard to tell if the character are mad, annoyed, happy, etc. because the reading is so flat.
The story itself was ok. The characters were fine though I felt like I already knew them from different authors by different names. They didn’t really add anything new and felt very familiar. That’s fine and can be comforting especially for a quick fun read. But what really bothered me and had me go “sure why not” was how often it felt like major plot elements sprung up out of nowhere. Major things that effect the characters that were there from the beginning (supposedly) but had little to no foreshadowing. Felt very “yes and”.
All-in-all this book was just ok. Not enough to stand out in my mind in 3 months, but not bad enough for me to ask for my credit back

Skip this narrator
The story was good but this was so hard to listen to. I wish they hadn't used this awful fake accent.

Winner for Slow Burn Lovers
This is a delicious slow burn romance. And the rejected mate trope? One of my favorites and so well done. Left me wanting more. I can hardly wait for what's to come.
The narrator does a great job with all the female voices. Especially Tif..spot on. The male voices do fall a little flat, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it.

Better than I thought
It was a nice story line with some surprises. Some things were pretty obvious and you knew what was going to happen but there is more twist that you didn’t expect. The narrators voice for the guy kind of was annoying, but not too bad. It is a cliffhanger ending just so you know.
