Summary

In hiding all her life, Layala prepares for the day the wicked High Elf King Thane will come to steal her—his powerful mate. She trains to take her revenge for the wrongful execution of her parents, who died for her freedom.

Now that day has come, forcing her to come face-to-face with what she’s hidden from: a dangerous, dark-haired, warrior king determined to marry her.

After she’s shoved into a black carriage pulled by six ominous steeds, Layala makes plans to take her captors’ lives and free herself...

...but Thane has a secret that makes it impossible for Layala to slay him. She has an even darker truth that makes loving her forbidden, no matter how much Thane wants to touch.

Dare to dive into this whimsical and deeply romantic story inspired by Hades & Persephone, The Lord of the Rings, and a sprinkle of Norse mythology. A tale that will grip you from the first moment and stay with you long after the last. Start listening now!

Author’s note: This is book 1 in a series and ends on a cliff. This is an adult slow burn romance with plenty of banter, tension, and a touch of steam. Contains violence and mature themes.

Amazing

I absolutely adored this book. Well written, capturing storyline and one of the best female lead characters I've stumbled upon.

Boring and repetitive

There are so many elements in this story that are exactly the same as so many other books I've read (mostly Shadow & Bone - she's an orphan raised by humans with a special power that only she has, which will allow her to destroy the barrier. The rift is the same as the fold. Volcras same as pale ones. Thane's squad are called the crows, Kaz's is called ravens. She has to marry a prince against her wishes. Her sworn enemy is a dark mage etc. etc.). It's like an AI has read Shadow & Bone and ACOTAR and then written this. It's the same old trope of a young beautiful girl getting kidnapped by an impossibly perfect Prince and falling totally in love. She's absolutely amazing at everything and wins all the fights against males that have trained their whole lives. Oh, and she has the usual sassy bad attitude that apparently everyone finds endearing for some reason. As you can guess, she plays hard to get, however, this literally goes on for the ENTIRE book and the relationship doesn't really get anywhere. The narration is also really distracting as many words are pronounced just plain weird. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the mispronounced words. I found this book really hard to finish and will probably return it.
