About this listen
A gripping account of the everyday heroism of British bomber crews in 1943 - the year when Bomber Command believed it could win WWII by bombing alone.
In 1943 the RAF began a bombing campaign against Germany, the like of which had never before been seen. Over the next twelve months, tens of thousands of aircrews flew across the North Sea to drop their bombs on German cities. They were opposed not only by the full force of the Luftwaffe, but by a nightmare of flak, treacherously icy conditions, and constant mechanical malfunction. Most of these crews never finished their tour of operations but were either shot down and killed, or taken prisoner by an increasingly hostile enemy.
This is the story of the everyday heroism of British bomber crews in the days when it was widely believed that the Allies could win the Second World War by bombing alone. Kevin Wilson has interviewed hundreds of former airmen about what their lives were like in 1943: the stomach-churning tension of flying repeatedly over hostile territory, the terror at being shot down or captured, and the peculiar mixture of guilt and pride at unleashing such devastation on Germany.

Very moving account of Bomber Command
Particularly poignant to listen to in this 80th year since D-Dat, and the loss of two young family members, both observer/navigators. The last chapter in particular resonates as we prepare to attend the inauguration of a memorial to the crew of ME685 in Toulouse, initiated by the British families. Churchill May have been too petty post war to honour the Bomber Boys for carrying out what they were told to do, but we will remember them.

Bravery beyond belief .
If you have any kind of interest in ww2 you should enjoy this. True heroism.
Makes me wonder if I would have what it takes to face what these guys faced on every raid. ..many of them still teenagers or in they're early 20's. i have so much respect for this generation of fighting men and women that witnessed it all. Love this..will read again.

Great story
I enjoyed the story, but the style of narration didn't work for me. The narrator introduces little pauses so the reading lacks continuity. Increasing the speed of narration beyond the default just gets you to the small pauses more quickly.
It's not something I have noticed on some 50+ books and hundreds of podcasts, so I don't think it's just me!

Robot reader?
I enjoyed the tales but the narration is very mechanical. Sounds almost like a Speak and Spell!
