Story
I will never be controlled again. A manipulative dragon shifter. A sexy phaetyn prince. Me? I shouldn’t even exist. With peace established in Verald, I should be free; Lord Tyrrik is liberated from his blood oath, after all. But the freedom in Verald is an illusion. If I remain, destruction will surely follow. As soon as I come into my powers, the blood-thirsty emperor of Draecon will know. Even now, he is hunting me. When a Phaetyn prince arrives promising safety, the solution seems perfect. A little too perfect. But is the objective of our group security or something more?

Story
The veil I've worn from birth carries with it a terrible loneliness, a suppression I cannot imagine ever being free of. My mother will always hate me. Her court will always shun me. When the peace delegation arrives from the savage world of Glacium, my life is shoved wildly out of control by the handsome Prince Kedrick, who, for unfathomable reasons, shows me kindness. Sometimes it takes the world bringing you to your knees to find that spark you thought forever lost. Sometimes it takes death to show you how to live.

But now my Grammy Ruby is gone, and here the bones sit on my kitchen table. I thought bitter relatives would be my biggest problem. The first time I met Merrick Crawford was during my job interview. Well, technically, I’d met him 20 minutes earlier when he’d barged into a fitting room a few doors down from my appointment. I yelled. He yelled. After an argument while standing in my bra, I proceeded to smash the door into the gorgeous jerk, trying to yank it shut. As you might imagine, I was freaked out when I discovered that the rude guy was my potential new boss. Yet he didn’t seem to recognize me. Or so I thought.... Until we wound up bickering again during my interview and he told me to go sniff my armpit.

Story
Lord Kagan Donmall rules the Verge, the border that protects the magical Fae Inlands from the mundane mortal world. The Verge has been weakening, and he suspects the source of magic is fading. His prayers to Danu have gone unanswered until now. The young mortal, Lauren Montgomery, hears the message of Danu and eagerly agrees to be the Lady of the Verge, for she desires more than a mundane life. But Lauren's twin sister, Tessa, ever her sister's protector, challenges the decision.
Summary
Everything I know is a lie.
I'm an ordinary mortal girl. Lord Irrik is a depraved dragon shifter. King Irdelron is an immortal tyrant. In the disease ridden land of Verald, life is mapped out much like the established rings of our kingdom. Everyone has a role.... Me? I'll be uselessly serving potato stew for the rest of my life because I can't make anything grow.
But starvation brews rebellion. When the king strikes, I'm captured by Lord Irrik. Instantly, I'm embroiled in a deadly game. One where I'm desperate to understand the rules. Because nothing makes sense anymore. Now, I'm not only fighting for my life...but a love could be the key to my freedom.
What if the truth means you're not who - or what - you thought you were?
Fans of dark fantasy, dragons, intrigue, and romance will devour this story. Due to thematic elements, this series is recommended for mature YA and up.

It was good-ish
Wellllll..... I don't know what to say about this one. It was good-ish. I enjoyed(ish again) it. It wasn't bad. I don't know. 2.5-3 stars.
I had a few issues with this book:
First, the dialogue and slang used did not fit whatever time period and setting this was supposed to be. It wasn't authentic sounding at all. It was so weird to have Ryn use words like "creeper", "bummer", "howdy", "A-hole", "broody-pants", and "turd-twat". Literally nothing from this book suggests that those words would be used in this society.
Second, this was a really long book to have hardly anything happen. The whole middle of the book became monotonous. Everything repeated over and over. And holy crap, there was a lot of torture happening. It just felt like it was stuck in a loop. I found it hard to keep reading at times because I was getting bored and it was feeling tedious so I was thankful that I added the whispersync narration so that I could power through those parts that were too boring to read. Listening to them helped.
Third, there were some things that didn't make sense. One example, Ryn was brutally tortured by this one guy and her blood was flying everywhere, yet it just so happens that her blood can kill the dude. So after that is found out, Ryn says he uses a whip rather than his "gloved fists" but uh, all of those torture sessions turned out just fine for him so.... And speaking of those "gloved fists" the word gloved was way over-used in this book. Someone's gloved hand or gloved fist was always doing something. We get it, they like their gloves..in fact, the gloves are probably just part of the uniform, therefore always on.
As far as the characters go, I pretty much hated Ryn in the beginning, once the drama started, because she was so incredibly stupid. She didn't listen to direct warnings and instructions, so that lead to her being taken to the torture-loving king. She hated the only person who was actually trying to make things better and covertly help her, the same person who tried to save her in the first place but she decided not to listen. I wanted to reach through the page and shake the hell out of her. Stupid girl. I started to like her a bit more later on but there really wasn't much growth or story arc to change things up, because as I said before, the story pretty much just looped for a good part of the book and not much happened. I really liked Lord Irrik. He was a good guy even though he did tons of horrible things.
I'm not sure if I will continue this series. Part of me is curious what will happen from here but the other part is okay leaving it end here. We'll see.
Edit: After reading through some reviews for the next two books, I am going to give them a hard pass. It sounds like they will not be my cup of tea. I am ending this series here, with the first book.
Audible: I added the whispersync audible narration to this kindle book. The narration was okay. I wasn't a huge fan but it was fine. It was, however, a lifesaver during those parts where it just felt too boring to keep reading so there was that.

Quite Enjoyable
I actually really enjoyed this book. It was unique and different from a lot of the others I’ve read. I love how dark it is, and I love a good hate to love trope.
I agree with other readers that everything about this book was Super Super predictable, but I still enjoyed it. It kinda makes you wonder how dumb can the main character be though, that she’s not putting this stuff together faster.. that’s one of the downsides when books are so predictable, but the main character is so in the dark. It becomes hard to relate to them and you find yourself rolling your eyes A Lot.
I did not find the narrator that bad. I actually thought she was pretty decent compared to a lot of others I’ve heard. I expected a lot worse based on what other commenters said. I’ve heard some pretty horrible narrators though,.... so maybe my expectations are lower now?
Overall I found I just generally enjoyed this and can’t wait to get through the others!!

Wow!
I purchased this book a while back but hadn’t read it yet. When I saw that the audiobook was out I purchased it. This story is fantastic. I loved it. Sierra Kline has added something more to it with her character voices. I hope the rest of the series is also performed by her. Her voice is wonderful. Thank you both for this adventure.

Great story. Good writing. Great Narration.
So much better than I expected. Brilliant story left much more to come in the next in the series. I have to admit one of the twists was quite obvious throughout the book but there were still some surprises. Really enjoyed the narrator as well.

i Love Sierra Cline's performances but this is the first that I'm annoyed how whiney she sounded but it could just also be the character as well. That being said, the character development and storytelling is very very good and I only want more!

Is there an audio for book 2?
I really enjoyed this book. The beginning dragged for me and it took me 3 days to actually pick it up, but once the book took off, I hella enjoyed all of it! I liked how there was not instant romance between the two main characters.
I really want to listen to book 2 but it's not on audible *cries in drae* hopefully it comes out in the future.
