Summary

A SWORD . . .

In the impoverished outer town of a kingdom where fae outrank humans, Faythe, an orphan with a talent for swordplay, knows the importance of keeping her head down around the fae patrol. She and best friend Jakon long for a better life, and her desire to swing her sword in combat may bring the purpose and coin she's yearned for.

A DREAM . . .

When she draws the attention of royal guard Nik, she soon learns that her mortal nature isn't the only reason to remain out of sight. Nik is a Nightwalker, a silent assassin of the mind with the power to enter others' dreams, and whether she trusts him or not, he's about to awaken abilities in Faythe that shouldn't exist in a human. Nightmarish abilities. Deadly abilities. Abilities that will teach Faythe blood really does run thicker than water . . . and if she doesn't trust in higher powers soon, blood will run indeed.

AN HEIR . . .

For this is no battle Faythe can fight with steel. Within the city walls, suspicions are arising, and here in the outer town she has deeper bonds to protect. It seems everyone will die with a dark secret to tell, but what if one unlikely human girl was born harboring the darkest secret of all . . . ?

narrator

Elizabeth Evans is exceptional. Just listened to the samples for the next 2 books & the narrator is terrible. I'll wait for a rerecord. Sorry

I liked it

I liked it, I didn’t LOVE it like some other books have captured me but it was interesting, enjoyable and has a good set of characters. It was a little predictable and Faythe can be a little naive, but I can tell it’s a set up for a great book series that I look forward to reading! It’s a perfect ‘book 1’. Definitely recommend if you like SJM!

I found this very dry and boring…

Cover illustration is good, narrator is good, the story…boring.

This wasn’t doing it for me, got 4 hrs in and just couldn’t finish…it was a chore to get that far to be honest.

I just didn’t care about any of the characters or the supposed high stakes…it just didn’t translate for me. I felt bored and like I was waiting for the story to start. The main character and the storyline has a very been there, heard this all before (or rather the better version) feel to it. The relationships induced many an eye rolling, the cliche best male friend wanting the main character, the mysterious bad boy…urgh.

Maybe it get’s better after the 4hr mark, I’ll never know…another wasted credit.

Has lots of potential!

I have to admit that at first I really wasn’t sold on this book; it just felt rather underdeveloped. I had a hard time engaging with the story and really investing in it, so I ended up rewinding it over and over again, until I gave up and just restarted- but I am DEFINITELY glad that I did!
It’s admittedly very slow to start, I would say it doesn’t really take off until into the second half of the book. That being said, there’s a lot that happens in the first half, but it just feels a little directionless until the second half, it doesn’t feel like it’s really going anywhere. There’s definitely quite a lot of filler, some people love filler, some people don’t. Some of the plot twists were quite predictable, I saw a few coming from miles away- but they were definitely well done.
All that being said, I certainly enjoyed this book, and I fully intend on (and look forward to) reading the next book. I think it ended VERY well.
Overall I would say that while it is quite clear throughout that the author is new and perhaps a little inexperienced, it is a good book, definitely has a lot of potential. After I restarted it, I did enjoy it a lot. I wasn’t perhaps on tenterhooks or desperate to keep listening, but I did really enjoy it, it’s a good, solid read. I do definitely recommend this, I am impressed by it. To be honest, I think my main issue with getting into it was just because I’ve recently read several series that are faster paced and more established in the sense that the authors are more experienced and have developed a unique voice, so going into a debut novel by a young author was a bit uncomfortable- what I mean to say (and am not doing a good job of) is that I think this is a fantastic first book and that the series has a lot of potential; my problem was that my judgement was clouded at first because my head was still caught up in a different series!
But yes, long story short, I highly recommend and I look forward to reading more from this author! 💚

If you like Throne of Glass

As my title says, if you likes Throne of Glass or any thing S.J Mass you will love An heir comes to rise!
I was skeptical going into the book, but quickly fell in love with the characters. I loved the premise of the night walkers and how that magic works.
It has fantastic range of character types, funny, their banter is amazing not to mention the chemistry between characters.
As always Elizabeth Evans is FANTASTIC and can do absolutely no wrong.
1000% recommend!

It’s ok.

Lots of similarities to Throne of Glass.
Overall I liked it, as it’s right up my alley. There were a few instances where a new element was introduced that didn’t have any foreshadowing, and I felt like it was just thrown there without thought. Also, (and I can’t go into specifics without giving away spoilers), her acceptance to certain circumstances were incredible fast. Especially at the very end of the book. I’ll read the rest and see what happens.

S.J. Maas fans would love this!

I loved this so much! I can't wait for the next audiobooks to come out. This was a perfect listen after listening to the ACOTAR series, Crescent City series and the Throne of Glass series. I love that Elizabeth Evans narrated this too. Looking forward to the next book.

Throne of Glass Vibes

I am getting major throne of glass and I am not complaining. I am really looking forward to see where this series goes! I really love this narrator. She is probably my favorite there is. Eeekkk I’m sensing a juicy romance. And that cliffhanger!? Good thing I already own the second book!

Disappointed

Nothing more than pulp, decent plot with absolutely no effort to develop characters or quality work.

5 stars all around

Well written, great magic system, slow burn, and narration by our earthly goddess Elizabeth Evans. What’s not to love ❤️

Basic Human Becomes More

I enjoyed listening to this book and thought the narrator did a wonderful job at telling the story. Unfortunately, I thought the story fell flat. Though intriguing in its premise, most things that happen are predictable. I also didn’t come away with this with the need to continue on to the next books to find out what happens. I will finish the series, but I’m not in a rush to finish as this story just fell flat for me.

Disappointed

Only ten chapters in. Love the narrator but the story just falls flat. Wish I hadn't spent a money on it.

Love this story!

I stumbled upon this story while looking for a two for one package to use, and couldn’t be more delighted. The story is compelling, the performance is wonderful, and I enjoyed every bit of it. I hope there’s a sequel!

Thank you

I'm so grateful to find another book narrated by Elizabeth Evans! Why isn't she narrating the entire series?
So far this Elizabeth is doing well. May the rest of this series be as good as book 1. Again thank you.
