Summary
In a future where the human race has split into three species, the mentally evolved Illuminatos have conquered the other two in a brutal Evolutionary War. Now, the seven most powerful Illuminatos, the Council, control the Earth, ruling over the other two human species through violent oppression.
As one of the defeated physically evolved Corporis, Samara lost everything: her family, her freedom, and her will to fight. But when her master, Lord Wyatt Faraday, commands her to find the mysterious leader of the Resistance, Tristan, everything she thought she knew is challenged.
Tristan is an Illuminatos who has turned his back on his own kind to follow his principles. An idealist hoping to restore peace and equality for all species, he cannot escape his past, and it may force him to make a terrible choice.
Their meeting will change the world, but will it be for the better?
Critic reviews
"Not only masterfully penned with a natural and addictive flow to the story, but also socially commentative, wildly unpredictable, and undeniably entertaining." (Self-Publishing Review)

Rekindling the Human Capacity for Love
Set on a dystopian future earth, The Drift introduces us to a fractured humanity. Three different varieties of humans, some enhanced, others 'unevolved', have been locked in an enduring war. The earth has been ravaged and the population has crashed. You would expect a bleak read from here onwards, but Aufenthie never denies us glimmers of hope throughout.
The pov characters include an emotionally-wounded assassin and an idealist close to breaking-point. While the romantic aspect of the story becomes clear early on, and I anticipated its trajectory, I could not predict each twist and turn along the way. The emotions are raw here, you quickly sink into each pov character's consciousness. The characters work hard for each victory and there are few convenient plot devices to usher them along. I found the worldbuilding and political system fascinating and hope to learn more about them in the next book.
I enjoyed the snappy dialogue, and each characters' voice is easy to identify. The pacing is deftly handled, but you may need to schedule some time to process the ending. It made me feel many things at once.

Fantastic experience!
I follow Laura Horowitz and was able to receive a free code through a TikTok give away. A review was not required but would be appreciated, regardless of what it said.
So with that out of the way, I am so glad that Ms. Horowitz provided me with a copy! This had everything I could have wanted in a Sci-Fi story! Exciting twists on evolution and what it means to be human, great world building, nuanced characters, action, and, of course, romance.
While the beginning was definitely something to get through due to the world building (it took me a few rewinds to imagine the world correctly) once the book lays out the foundation, it does a good job of not treating the reader as if they need their hand held to navigate the world while still giving subtle reminders to the difference from our own.
The narration performance is fantastic. Laura Horowitz added depth to the characters with her interpretations of their tone, inflection, and volume. With her performance it was easy to imagine their faces filled with joy or grief, sorrow or regrets, and everything in between. Only thing that threw me of is when they would mention that one of the main characters looked more like a older teenager / young adult as opposed to her actual age (what I assume to be late 20s to early 30s) I could not picture someone that young to the voice. But that is a small detail.
Highly recommend this book and I look forward to more works by Casie Aufenthie!

TikTok find
I accidentally came across this book when I discovered it’s narrator on TikTok! It turned out to be a really great dystopian novel. I am genuinely satisfied and surprised at the creativity and enjoyability of this. The sooner that audible gets to having Laura narrate the second one the better!

Fantastic Scyfy romance
I don't usually go for sci fi, or in this case dystopian sci fi, but I'm so glad I decided to take a chance on this one. While it took me a chapter or two to really get into it, once I did? That was it. It's a lengthy book, but honestly, once that story gets moving, it just keeps on going, with a wonderful flow that kept me from even being tempted to skim. I was hooked. The world was intriguing, yes, and the various species and abilities, as well, but it was the relationship between Tristan and Samara that really made the book for me. It was a fantastic slow burn romance that had me rooting for the couple at every turn of the page - all the way up to the end, where I definitely shed some tears, cursed the author, then reluctantly admitted that it truly was a fantastic ending that will have me holding my breath until the sequel. Bonus: the narrator's voice is lovely. Didn't make me wince like some do. Highly recommend!

Loved this audiobook
This was a great book. It did take me a couple of chapters to truly get into it but when I did I could not stop listening! There were so many twists and turns. Loved the world the author built and all of characters. The audiobook narrator Laura Horowitz did an amazing job, really made the book come to life!

Beyond Word and Worlds
The narrator has brought an even deeper character development to the authors already detailed characters that has one physically, mentally, and emotionally addicted not only to this single story but to the next books. The beyond word and worlds new take on an old love story of desire and heart shattering loss is vividly brought to life with Laura’s vocals. She is able to clearly and distinctively differentiate between the many characters and their varying emotions to the point that the listener doesn’t need to be told who has spoken what phrase and statement.
This reminds me of a perfect Sci-Fi Romance mix surrounding a character romance connecting an Assassin and a Psychokinetic with a tiny bit of spice and an evolutionary post war world with hints of alternative dimensions.
If you love Sci-Fi or Romance you’ll love this with an easy bridge to connect these two genres.
