About this listen
How many times, when things go wrong, have you said to yourself 'Why me?' Some people seem to have more than their fair share of bad luck, and Kate Parker is one of them. So when Kate and her ten-year-old son Jack move to Oxford to start a new life, Kate is determined that events of the past will not come back to haunt them. Despite the suffocating support she receives from her overbearing in-laws, she starts to feel threatened. Somehow her comfortable family home doesn't feel quite safe - it's almost as though someone is watching them.
A chance meeting with a charming Oxford professor helps to convince her that she can overcome her fears, and that she and Jack can start to live a normal life once again. But just when she feels happier than she's felt in years, a shocking revelation blows all of their lives apart.

One of those books that you just want to download the next book that the author has written the only disappointment was finishing it!

Silly but fun
I've already listened to all the other Louise Millar books but the reviews have made me leave this to last even with my favourite narrator.
The overall premise and ending were silly (all the Louise Millar books are far fetched at best) but still gripping. The ideal antidote if you've just read something heavy going. If you like the others by the same author then this will be compelling and will keep you guessing. The only downside is that a much better ending is glaringly obvious and the way it finished was an anticlimax but still an enjoyable few hours and a credit well spent.

A very rare five stars from me.
Captivating and real from the outset, Kate wasn't always likeable but she was brilliantly drawn and this was true of every character. The story was compelling enough to keep me in the car way beyond the time I'd switched off the ignition nearly every day, and I was bereft when it came to an end. And the twist... oh, the twist. You'll not guess it, truly you won't.

An engaging and interesting Book
Would you consider the audio edition of Accidents Happen to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version, but the audio version has an intresting narator with discernible voices for each of the characters, but without being distracting or over theatrical
What did you like best about this story?
It has the story from different characters view points throughout and though you may be loathing one character at one point, you find yourself sympathising with them the next.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
the family confrontation scene is the most emotionally charged and engaging for me, though the run up to the ending is equally engaging, but I don't want to give anything away.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I think i did laugh out loud in some places in the book, i would say it is emotionally engaging, but doesn't overly wrench your emotions. everything is done on a nice even keel, but still involving you in each aspect without a roller-coaster effect.
Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this book, I actually had a night where i woke up with a sudden realisation of what someone was up to. It turned out to be wrong, but my stomach flipped over with what i had assumed. I felt for the characters! the ending surprised me too. a very unusual thing when CSI is usually solved part way through for me!

Remarkable narration
I chose this on a whim, knowing I've enjoyed Clare Corbett's narration in the past. She's really done a splendid job here, with a huge range of characters from pre teen boys to elderly ladies...such a special talent. (Do listen to her performance of The Widow if you haven't already!)
The story was quite engaging , and I liked the evocation of Oxfordshire. I hadn't really read the book description, so I didn't know where the plot was going at all, thinking it was mainly a romantic novel, rather than the pretty creepy thriller it really became, and only really put things together towards the end; which is nice. I could have done without the snake bits to be honest, they felt a bit disjointed, but I guess they made sense at the end.

When is an accident an accident ?
What made the experience of listening to Accidents Happen the most enjoyable?
Most of the characters were believable and there were not so many so as to become confused. The plot was easy to follow but it did keep you sufficiently intrigued so as to want to continue listening.
What other book might you compare Accidents Happen to, and why?
I am not sufficiently well read to make a comparison.
What about Clare Corbett’s performance did you like?
On the whole her voice characterizations were believable although one or two of the male characters were not as strong.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I think it made me feel for the main character .There were places where a tear or two were elicited .Not many laughs but it is not that kind of book. The twist at the end was a complete surprise and brought the various story lines together successfully.

A thoroughly good book
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Probably. I'm very choosy about my recomendations and this doesn't quite make the absolutely must listen list, but it's a good book and I did enjoy it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It really was quite gripping and I constantly wanted to know what was going to heppen next.
Any additional comments?
Just how many times can things go wrong for someone? Stretch it too far and it might just be too much. I loved the story, wasn't quite so keen on the ending. The characters were good and the narration was excellent. A worthwhile listen.

Tense and gripping but doesn't feel as dark as it
What made the experience of listening to Accidents Happen the most enjoyable?
The story builds up steadily reeling you in gently, leaving you wondering about the main character. Then suddenly something unexpected happens, making you re-evaluate and you see everything in a new light. The same goes for most of the characters - you only gradually find out about their personal baggage, what has happened in their lives and what makes them tick. The building up of tension was excellent. There were times when I actually jumped and shouted out loud.It is difficult to say more without giving anything away, but it is worth giving the story a bit of time to develop. A brilliant listen!.
What did you like best about this story?
The way the different characters unfolded was excellent. The twists in the plot at the end were great - I had not anticipated the ending at all, and usually you have a good idea of how the story is going to end.
What about Clare Corbett’s performance did you like?
I have always enjoyed stories read by.Clare Corbett and this was no exception. Pace and intonation are always brilliant.and characters felt real.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book dragged you right in: you could empathise with every character. I sometimes felt like shouting in frustration at something someone did - or even shouting a warning! It was scary enough for me not to listen in the dark!
Any additional comments?
I was at first worried that the story wasn't going to move on, and suddenly I found I was hooked. I was really pleased to have chosen this.

Couldn't turn it off!
What did you like most about Accidents Happen?
The first half of this book is far more than just a thriller. It contains a fantastic description of someone suffering from the extreme anxiety caused by post traumatic shock, and seems to me to give sound advice on the way to tackle the terror that can close down a life. (Hmmm...maybe a little radical in the book, but the idea of tackling things head on with a little help from your friends seems sound to me.)
The performance is excellent, Kate is completely believable, though I found the Saskia character lost my sympathy as she became too whiny. The portrayal of Jack, aged eleven, is little short of perfect. I have an eleven year old grandson so I know what an eleven year old boy is supposed to sound like and this is spot on.
I found the denouement far fetched but I really didn't mind. I had been kept on the edge of my seat and that's what thrillers are for.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jack, because he was so real.
Have you listened to any of Clare Corbett’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I don't think I have ever heard Clare Corbett before, but would certainly seek out other performances.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Putting back the pieces?
