Summary

Single mother Callie has come to rely heavily on her best friend Suzy. But Callie suspects Suzy's life isn't as simple as it seems. It's time she pulled away - going back to work is just the first step towards rediscovering her old confidence. So why does she keep putting off telling Suzy about her new job? And who will care for her rather frail daughter, Rae, while she is gone? Suzy and Callie live close to each other on a typical cramped, anonymous London street. Neighbours seem to move in, and move on, before you have even learned their names. Callie's increased sense of alienation leads her to try to befriend a new resident on her street, Debs. But Debs is anxious, odd. You wouldn't trust her with your child - especially not if you knew anything about her past.

An unexpected joy

This book was a lovely surprise. I was expecting chick lit but it is so much more and definitely one of my most memorable listens of the year. The characterisation is excellent and the plot twists and turns so many times to keep you continually guessing. Clare Corbett is an excellent narrator and Louise Millar an author to watch.

Great story, grating narration in places

Gripping story, well paced with excellent plot twists. The narration is grating though. The men's voices are strange and too similar to each other, they jar and distract from the story. The child voices are awful, totally unnecessary. And over the top.

Very Disappointed

Really disappointed with the book. It seems it was trying to be a complicated with a lots of twists and turns, but it didn't achieve that. I found the ending very unsatisfactory with several threads left in the air. The narrator was excellent, full of good accents a very soothing voice.
I feel I have wasted a lot of time trying to find something in this book to make it worthwhile

really absorbing!

Fantastic narrator and a very interesting story which I was riveted by! The way the story unfolds slowly really sucks the listener in and the accents were spot on.

Really enjoyed this one

When I first started listening to this one I was a bit surprised that I'd actually bought it. It seemed a bit too much like chic lit. That passed quite quickly though and I got drawn into hearing the story unfold through the voice of the three protagonists. The drama builds slowly but surely and there are lots of twists and turns. I listened compulsively at every opportunity from about half way through.
The narrator is excellent and really adds to the whole experience.

Keeps You Guessing

Calle and her daughter rely quite heavily on their American neighbour Susie who seems to have it all - she's pretty, has three boys and lots of money. When Calle decides to go back to work, Susie is there for her as always but a new neighbour on the block arrives causing the women concerns - why was she sacked from her old job, doesn't she seem overly paranoid....

Excellent "listen" !

Clare Corbett is an exceptional narrator - her characterisation is wonderful - such an enjoyable listen and the book itself is "keeps you guessing" one ... really found it hard to stop listening when I got to work or home ... thoroughly enjoyable.
