Summary
When the wedding of her oldest friend ends with a shocking murder, Dr Nell Ward is once again caught up in a web of subterfuge, secrets and lies...
Dr Nell Ward is delighted when her childhood friend Percy announces she's engaged to handsome businessman Hawke McAnstruther - and rashly offers to host the wedding at Finchmere, her family's estate. But she hadn't anticipated Percy's parents' fiery disapproval of the groom.
The ceremony is barely over before Hawke's shady personal and professional life starts to unravel, and tension ripples through the assembled guests. When the wedding night ends with a shocking death, Nell, best-friend Rav and DI James Clarke all find themselves embroiled in a murder mystery worthy of Agatha Christie.
Surviving a terrifying threat to her own life, Nell has to face up to the truth. Not just about murder at Finchmere, but about where her heart truly lies...
The second book in the Nell Ward cosy crime series - perfect for fans of Richard Osman, Fiona Leitch, Faith Martin and The Appeal.

Characters are incredibly unlikeable
I enjoyed the first book, and the narration is excellent. The main character, Nell, is likeable too. However the men in this book are frankly gross. Their attitudes towards Nell and how they talk to her and how they make things which are tough subjects about them makes me hate this book. It’s 2023 for Christ sake. For example, if someone is sexually assaulted, you don’t make that about you. You feel empathy for them and want to help them.

One long, tedious soap opera
Honestly, this wasn’t so much a Murder/Mystery, as a very badly written Victorian soap opera romance. The story was implausible, the body count unnecessarily high and the action sequences unrealistic!
The police investigation was conspicuous by its absence - yo could count on 1 hand how many times they returned to the scene/witnesses to cross question them, given that they had multiple murders in situ!
Additionally the narrator is not to my liking. She makes Nell sound like a man! Her delivery is slow yet when she’s narrating a dramatic scene, she really goes over the top! I find it amusing and not at all dramatic or atmospheric!
This is not the type of mystery novel I appreciate and the novelty of solving a murder using the eating/breeding/migrating habits of a bat (book 1) or a barn owl, is too disingenuous for me.
Then to top it off, the lengthy monologue at the end, giving the ecological explanation of the crime, is tedious to me.
All in all, this just isn’t my genre of murder/mystery. Every aspect of it, seems pointless to me (even the relationships are Mills & Boon)! There truly is no cohesive story and certainly very little realism!
Personally, I’ve reached the end of my journey with this series.

over long, very weak story
difficult to care about any of the characters. long winded plot. completely ruined by waffle about relationships which was a waste of time and casual word filler.
don't waste your credit.

A more believable crime
I found this second book in the series a more believable crime and motive, although the behaviours of the characters less so. They seem intent on making a drama out of a crisis, all that was missing was the twirling of moustaches and the wail of ‘save me’ from a poor little rich girl. The narrator continues to fully differentiate the characters with good vocal skills, but the slowing down of sentences to create suspenseful moments continues to grate; just give us a bit of ‘Jaws’ music and be done with it!

Good mystery with nuggets of ecology thrown in
Enjoyed the second book in the series. But felt there was too much detail about medical precedure after a main character sustains an injury. It felt like filler. So I knocked a star off. Otherwise its an enjoyabel listen.

Gripping story
It’s unusual to find a book that has both strong rounded characters and a a gripping, plot. I have read both books in this series and if anything this one is even better than the first, maybe because I’ve already gotten to know, and care about, the principal characters.
I can’t wait for the third book in the trilogy.

I wanted to like this more
I didn’t enjoy this 2nd book in the series as much as the first. There was much less science involved. This book was a lot more of a “whodunnit” than the first, which held a bit more interest, but there were a few too many over dramatised / cliched love triangles for me.
