Summary

The Beauty Myth for the Instagram generation.

Women Don't Owe You Pretty is the ultimate book for anyone who wants to challenge the out-dated narratives supplied to us by the patriarchy.

Through Florence's story, you will learn how to protect your energy, discover that you are the love of your own life and realise that today is a wonderful day to dump them.

Florence Given is here to remind you that you owe men nothing, least of all pretty.

Warning: contains explicit content (and a load of uncomfortable truths).

The feminist book everyone is talking about.

It's okay

I've been following her Instagram account for a while and thought it'd be better to get the audiobook, however the majority of this book feels like ranty instagram posts - most chapters are only between 5 - 7 minutes long.

In my opinion, the topics mentioned or 'discussed' are very one sided and I guess they're experiences the author must have been through multiple times and now she wants you to know not to do the same thing, such as don't wear a bodycon dress with high heels and be uncomfortable just to please a man (idk if it's just me, but I've always dressed for myself, not for anyone else) - however, it comes across more like hate at anything considered hetero.

It feels like it was written by someone who had a very sheltered upbringing and suddenly had an epiphany one day to not believe everything in advertisements or films.

I'd say it's worth listening to if you don't have love for yourself or know that you don't need a significant other to be happy, but don't just believe every word she says - what works for her may not work for you.

It's a very short book so you'll get through it quickly. But there's a lot of ranting and I think a mistake at one point in the recording where she had to reread a word?

Overall it's a bit meh and not what I expected unfortunately, it's just a regurgitation of her instagram posts in book format.

Plagiarism

Very angry and disturbed this content was stolen from The Slumflower. The book is hypocritical and I feel really sad that I downloaded this and bought a physical copy when it is just a rip off of black women whom Floss claims to be an ally to.

You should read the original

I hope this book helps someone but you should check out the original "What a time to be alone" by Chidera Eggerua. I wish I had read it before this copy. As Chidera's is a much more inclusive version of feminism.

LMFAO

I had to laugh. This is terrible writing with immature views and as a lot of other reviewers have pointed out, reeks of virtue signalling.
Sigh, instagram and snapchat have done more to fry the brains of millenials than any nuclear disaster could have.
Forget having a man in her life, I wonder how the writer’s ( if one can call her a writer) female friends tolerate her? She is angry for all the usual teenage issues which in her case have seeped into her twenties.
An absolutely useless read.

Don’t read.

Waste of time. Read any of the work by Chidera (Slumflower)

Get more years under your belt

Get some more years under your belt

While it does have some great empowering things to say to young women.
It trips over itself I think time and again by trying not to hurt anyone’s feelings and be as PC as possible.

The writer I’m sure has some experience of life however I believe that being 20 years old and being an adult for less than 1/4 of her life shows through in this.

Nothing like evil capitalism to make you rich and give you perfect stage to preach

Immature.

Immature. A juvenile account of what it means to be feminist written by a 20 year old who seems to think she’s seen and heard it all. Laughable.

Couldn’t get through chapter one

This book feels very adolescent. It’s riddled with blame and destructive stereotypes. It’s white, ableist privilege centric. Talks about eating disorders like they’re a choice. Really truly terrible and helpful.

In your face and thought provoking

This had me questioning everything. I felt educated and empowered at the same time. I thought it was brave and vulnerable and I got so much from it, thank you!
