About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Erik Amdahl and his spirited daughter, Sofia, have embarked on a long-promised cross-country ski trip deep into Norway's arctic circle. For Erik, it's the chance to bond properly with his remaining daughter following a tragic accident. For Sofia, it's the proof she needs that her father does care.

Then, far from home in this snowbound wilderness, with night falling and the mercury plummeting, an accident sends them in search of help - and shelter. Nearby is the home of a couple - members of Norway's indigenous Sami people - who they've met before and who welcome them in. Erik is relieved. He believes the worst is over. He thinks that Sofia is now safe. He could not be more wrong. He and Sofia are not the old couple's only visitors that night - and soon he and Sofia will be running for their lives....

And beneath the swirling light show of the Northern Lights, a desperate fight ensues - of man against man, of man against nature - a fight for survival that plays out across the snow and ice.

A story of endurance and of the desperate, instinctive will to survive, of a father's love for his child, of knowing when to let go - and of a daughter's determination to prove herself worthy of that love, Where Blood Runs Cold is a pulse-racing thriller from a master story teller.

Where are we going now?

As the author notes, this is an unexpected direction for a Giles Kristen novel. But, some of the characters are immediately recognisable if you are a fan of his work.
I was moved by many things in this story but the father's pride in his daughter's growth as a person really tore at the heart.
Thanks Giles, also for the decision not to use a pseudonym, but to credit your loyal fans with the intelligence to take your work on its own merit. A great job you've done too.

Thoroughly gripping

Another brilliant book by Giles Kristian. A departure from his usual genre, but no less enthralling and skillful.

Fantastic

Being a fan of his other books and of historical novels in general, I initially was not attracted to this more modern genre but because i know he is a wonderful writer, i wanted to try this book- wow am i pleased that i gave it a chance! What a fantastic novel. Usually i listen to audible to get me to sleep at night but i could only listen to this during the day as it was so exciting it kept me awake :) I believe that he is one of the best authors of our time and i would happily read anything else that he writes. I loved the appearance of the spiritual aspect too, which linked in with the history of the area, and thus gave us fans of Raven Eye etc, a bit of a nod somehow :) the Authors note at the end was also most interesting and quire emotional in its own way. Masterful narration as always. Philip Stevens can only enhance any book that he reads and i have thoroughly enjoyed listening to his narrations of Giles Kristian’s other books - he really brings them to life for the Audible audience. My grateful thanks to both author and narrator for another incredible partnership event!

A superb tale from a brilliant writer.

As a huge fan of Giles Kristian's King Arthur and Viking series I was a little worried at his change of path into a modern thriller.

I need not have worried, the emotional journey that the characters go through was right up there with Lancelot, and the slow burning thriller built up to such an intense level of suspense that I couldn't stop listening for the last few hours.

The detailed narrative was so vivid that I felt transported to a storm in Norway.

Great work Mr Kristian I'm excited to see what comes next!

Something Different

I love Kristian’s historical novels so thought I’d give this contemporary novel a go. It is a more thoughtful piece than his usual material, exploring the meanings of loss, parenthood and the nature of endurance. I throughly enjoyed it. Kristian’s fabulous descriptions turn the Norwegian landscape into a character in its own right. The chase, which I thought might be boring after his usual offerings of battles and action, was gripping, with enough twists and turns to keep me engaged.
