About this listen

A Chronicles of St Mary's short story that is sure to entertain. If you love Jasper Fforde or Ben Aaronovitch, you won't be able to resist Jodi Taylor.

**Includes bonus St Mary's escapades Desiccated Water and Markham and the Anal Probing - never before heard in audio - and original introductions read by the author herself**

'Max, your father is here. He's come to take Matthew away'

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Max's husband met Max's father? What would Leon do?

They're normally a fairly amiable bunch, but this is the story of what to expect if St Mary's doesn't like someone. As in, really doesn't like someone. Warning: contains a unit-wide criminal enterprise, a great deal of illegal activity and a sad misuse of public resources. All the things a father will do to protect his family.

It is also a story of revenge. Because this is payback - St Mary's style.

**Bonus stories**

Desiccated Water - Professor Rapson breaks astonishing new ground with his latest feat of scientific invention.

Markham and the Anal Probing - When Markham disappears in the middle of nowhere, Max jumps to the only logical conclusion - alien abduction.

Slightly odd one

One significant short story here, plus a few odd snippets. It is important to be very familiar with the St Mary's world, arguably both worlds. Without it the main story will not make any sense. Zara Ramm is still excellent.

St Mary’s know how to get their revenge

Really great story but much as I enjoy Zara Ramm narration I think it would have benefitted from a male reading it so we could have heard Leon’s voice. The story was great but Zara is Max in my head so initially it didn’t make sense as it was from Leon’s view.

Too Short, but sweet!

As usual Jodi Taylor, with humour and a very devious mind, takes us back to St Mary’s. When Max’s father turns up out of the blue, Leon and the staff of St Mary’s plot to get him out of her life for good...

Author's Interludes Annoying

The brief interludes by the author herself cast a shadow over the good stories themselves. The author writes very well with humorous insight and creativity. She does not read well as a narrator. The rest however as usual, was read beautifully by Zara Ramm.

Desiccated brilliance

4 stories in one book

Main story - AWDYLSYF

had always been genuinely curious about what had gone on regarding Max’s childhood - this manages to both tell you & not tell you - that may seem odd but I mean you’re given the outline and with the series so far you can fill in the puzzle.

Similarly with Leon’ history, it’s not in-depth but it ties up what occurred and puts it in parallel with Max’ history.

Desiccated water is btw actually brilliant as a story & as an idea itself, providing you get the ratios right ofc 😉

Markham is just an utter bastard & tbh I have to applaud him for it 😂

Fabulous as always

I have loved the entire St Mary‘s series. So well put together and this particular story ties up a lot of the other bits and pieces through the series. The last of the trio just made me laugh so much. The narration is superb as well with terrific characterisation. Can’t wait for the next one.

Such a laugh

Such a laugh. Love how ajodi writes her books! Having author notes read by the author makes it more special.

short stories

i have to say the wait was worth it. this is one of the funniest collections ever. max's father gets his just desserts pand it fills in a lot of things in other stories from Leon's point of view.

Weird to have “Max” reading Leon’s life story...

It continued to feel weird throughout, though eventually I got into the story, but it would definitely have been much less confusing if Leon had been voiced by a man.
