Summary

A woman’s trip home reveals frightening truths in a twisty novel of murder and family secrets by the New York Times bestselling author of And Now She’s Gone and These Toxic Things.

TV writer Yara Gibson’s hometown of Palmdale, California, isn’t her first choice for a vacation. But she’s back to host her parents’ twentieth-anniversary party and find the perfect family mementos for the celebration. Everything is going to plan until Yara receives a disturbing text: I have information that will change your life.

The message is from Felicia Campbell, who claims to be a childhood friend of Yara’s mother. But they’ve been estranged for years - drama best ignored and forgotten. But Yara can’t forget Felicia, who keeps texting, insisting that Yara talk to her “before it’s too late.”

But the next day is already too late for Felicia, whose body is found floating in Lake Palmdale. Before she died, Felicia left Yara a key to a remote lakeside cabin. In the basement are files related to a mysterious tragedy, unsolved since 1998. What secrets was Felicia hiding? How much of what Yara knows about her family has been true?

The deeper Yara digs for answers, the more she fears that Felicia was right. Uncovering the truth about what happened at the cabin all those years ago will change Yara’s life--or end it.

Critic reviews

“[Narrator Alaska] Jackson's inflections perfectly capture the story and make the way the individual characters communicate with one another seem real. With a compelling story and a strong performance, listeners get a thrilling experience from this well-performed audiobook.”AudioFile Magazine

“Hall exhibits a mastery of slowly building pressure-cooker tension until it explodes. A less accomplished writer might not have been able to be as convincing with occasional situational constructs that stretch credulity, but Hall pulls all of it off with aplomb. She remains a writer to watch.”Publishers Weekly

“What’s most special about the book is the array of complex characters…The dialogue is sharp, observant, and emotional without ever straying into sentimentality, and the mystery of who is targeting the Gibson family manages to stay compelling despite many twists and turns…This captivating domestic thriller will keep you on your toes.”Kirkus Reviews

cannot finish

I cannot make heads or tails of what the story is. All I know is the mother is obnoxious and Yara has asthma.

Different

I have read all of this author’s books and I liked this one the least. I think the over emphasis of the setting and the asthma made me feel this way. The narration was excellent but the story was not that great.

Narrator ruined it for me…

I managed to hang in there and listen til the end, but the narrator ruined this experience for me. The story was too drawn out for the plot. I’ve read and enjoyed several other books by this author, but this one was my worst experience. The narrator had very little variation in her voice, subsequently ALL of the characters sounded the same; male and female alike. With different voices I might have enjoyed the story more. Not your best..

For as deep as the lake is, the book isn’t

I wanted to like this book if for no other reason than to see a blank woman succeed but I couldn’t. I’m glad Rachel had a meaningful life aside from writing this novel. It has no depth. We didn’t really get to know any of the characters accept on the surface. I couldn’t cheer anyone on or despise anyone because all of the conversations and scenes were superficial. There were so many characters but no real story until the last quarter of the book. The last quarter was good, not great. I forced myself to finish the book but I’m really glad it’s over.

Kinda figured this one out quickly, but ...

the book had enough intricacy to make it a very good read or listen. The narration was VG+. The mother is over the top MEAN. The sister is obnoxious. Worthwhile investment. It ain't just Palmdale: don't move to an American desert (city - rural) if you value your respiratory health.

I heard an interview with the author on a favorite radio program. I definitely thought this book was worth the purchase.

The title of a book

I love it when the title of a book is completely unveiled at the conclusion of the story. This book did just that. Great read!!

Good storyline

Original storyline and lots of background provided. Longer than it needed to be. Narrator was okay.
