Summary
Nominated for a 34th annual Lambda Literary Award • A scintillating thriller with an emotional punch: “The tension builds to unbearably claustrophobic levels. To say more would rob readers of the 'no, he didn’t' suspense that makes Bath Haus an unexpectedly twisted, heart-pounding cat-versus-mouse thriller" (Los Angeles Times).
Oliver Park, a recovering addict from Indiana, finally has everything he ever wanted: sobriety and a loving, wealthy partner in Nathan, a prominent DC trauma surgeon. Despite their difference in age and disparate backgrounds, they've made a perfect life together. With everything to lose, Oliver shouldn't be visiting Haus, a gay bathhouse. But through the entrance he goes, and it's a line crossed. Inside, he follows a man into a private room, and it's the final line. Whatever happens next, Nathan can never know. But then, everything goes wrong, terribly wrong, and Oliver barely escapes with his life.
He races home in full-blown terror as the hand-shaped bruise grows dark on his neck. The truth will destroy Nathan and everything they have together, so Oliver does the thing he used to do so well: he lies.
What follows is a classic runaway-train narrative, full of the exquisite escalations, edge-of-your-seat thrills, and oh-my-god twists. P. J. Vernon's Bath Haus is perfect for listeners curious for their next must-listen novel.

A predictable thriller
I used Audible to listen to this book.
Unfortunately, the style of narration / choice of narrator was not well chosen. The narration switches between Oliver (read as overly dramatic/scared, even when doing mundane things like peeing) and Nathan (whiny and patronising). When the narrators narrate a third character, Henning, especially, reads those characters as high pitched camp. Ru Paul would wince.
The prose and dialogue left a lot to be desired.
The plot was a mess and a little bit dishonest if i reflect on how the characters behaved early in the novel in the light of what is revealed in the denouement.
I finished this book reluctantly and would not recommend.

Pretty good
The story itself is interesting and engaging, if a bit predictable. The narration is ok but I found them both a bit whiny, which kinda spoiled it a bit.

Too long and boring
Please avoid!. It's melodramatic and nonsensical storyline. The plot doesn't warrant reading beyond chapter 2

Fear and Loathing in Washington, D.C.
This is a raw, sweaty, nervy and paranoid thriller that excites and terrifies in equal measure. Anyone who has ever fantasised (which is just about 100% of the human race) will be able to identify with this and feel the vicarious acid burn as it all goes south for poor Oliver. This is a thriller to enjoy and endure at the same time. The ending is extraordinarily well crafted with elements of pure terror and shocking farce interlaced with class, money, jealousy, control, sex and love seen through the prism of alcohol, drugs and violence.

Edgy
Tightly plotted, believable characters, relentlessly ratcheted tension. I"ll def look up his other work. Worth a pop.

Loved this audible story and performance
I think this would still be a great book to read but it really came alive in audible format due to the fantastic narration of both Michael Crouch and Daniel Henning.
Loved the story and my nerves were on edge during certain chapters. The story built up well and the baddie was a great character.
The author deserves praise and I will check out other titles but i might pick my next book by narrator.

Too much overacting!
I am persevering because I’ve read other reviews about this book and generally, the story is pretty good. BUT the narration is so OTT that I cringe constantly.
Also as another reviewer said-the similes!! OMG TOO MANY.
And, this is just a personal observation as someone from the UK, but some of the pronunciations do my head in!!

Purple prose for the Lavender Set
--The first person description of the main character was too extreme (not too vivid, which I would have welcomed) Lots of sentences like: "I was surrounded by a room full of spiders, but I was the only one without 8 legs and venom sacs."
--The emotional reality of this relationship wasn't established so it was always hard to justify why the main character was so torn up by any of his decisions.
--The flashbacks deadened any forward momentum.
--The book is told from 2 characters' perspectives, which reveals too much information to sustain the suspense.
--The narrators were most likely doing the best with what was given, but their best was a tremulous monotone.

Love, love, love this
Finished in one day. Super dark domestic noir. I felt so tense while reading this perfectly paced and plotted novel. I wouldn’t call it a mystery as you can sort of feel what’s coming and that makes it all the more heart racing. Can’t say much more without giving things away. Narration was very good too!

Charged and Intoxicating
A journey through the lives of partners - Oliver, a recovering drug addict, and Nathan, the man who helped turn Oliver's life around and maintains a life of stability and structure to prevent his relapse - Bath Haus is a chilling account of love and deception, and one couple's attempts to maintain a life together despite the obstacles.
Dramatic narration by Michael Crouch and Daniel Henning bring Oliver and Nathan to life in an adventure from heart racing start to climactic ending.
This thriller by P.J. Vernon went on my wish list as soon as I finished his novel When You Find Me. Exhilarating suspense from start to finish kept me on the edge, making it difficult to put this down, and making it well worth the wait for this title's release.
I'm adding this to my review as I looked for it specifically before purchase and didn't see it mentioned - There are some mildly violent references to sexual acts and descriptive sexual related scenes in this book. However neither were enough to cause me to stop listening, even as a *slightly* modest cishet female. So, if you're concerned about that- worry not!

I just couldn’t finish it
I really tried to get through this book. 2 hours left, and had to just stop. There is not one redeeming character in this entire novel. Maybe the detective, but she’s barely around to buffer the string of unlikable people making terrible decisions.

Do it
Fascinating book. Absolutely excellent. Kept me listening straight through. The narrator for Oliver did a fantastic job. The narrator of Nathan did a good job with Nathan but all the other characters struggled.

Bad narrators, and horrid images of doggie torture
I bought this book because it was in an email about the best books of the year- I couldn’t get through it. The narrators were so bad- I think they might be better suited to reading non-fiction. I was starting to wonder if they’d ever even felt an emotion before. And, the main character in the story kept doing stuff that was so stupid (like going to meet the guy that tried to kill him, alone) that it just wasn’t believable. Almost like that pretty little liars tv show.
Then, there was discussion about pet torture, and it was really bad. Every time I think about those images, my insides get tight and I have to remind myself there are also rainbows and butterflies in the world. That was definitely when I decided enough was enough.
