Summary
Casting necromancy without ever learning how to isn't supposed to be possible.
A starving orphan girl named Vita is somehow managing it anyway, and she's not sure if this is going to be the solution to her life's problems or a horrifying, spiraling mess of problems she can hardly conceive.
Set in a massive world of floating islands with a dangerous entity known as the Mistwatcher that lurks beneath them, Vigor Mortis pairs adorable charm with haunting fantasy.

Wholesome, Endearing, but also Horror
Frankly, I am amazed at how good this story was.
It is the oddest mix of a heartfelt, underdog, coming of age story, of a cute psychopath, with eldritch elements.
In addition, we get to explore a rich and amazingly bizarre world alongside a set of well developed characters.
The only slights I have against this audiobook is that the narrator does not make it easy to distinguish between the 'inner' dialogue (of which there is a lot) and 'spoken' dialogue. Also, the editing sometimes allows too much time between words leaving you to think a sentences is over when it is not, and breaking the story telling flow. The thick U.S. accent may also annoy some listeners.
All in all, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book for fantasy fans.

cute and terrifying
in short I loved it the way the author handled the main character and her relations with her abilities and really made the main character come to life and and equal care is put into all the characters you encounter in the book the story could have easily had the main character just hide and slowly growing power with her ability but the author put a number of obstacles and trials in her way that will force her to to face threats she's unprepared for despite the fact that in the long term she could become very powerful.

The Gem Of Gems
A tiny psychopath, gets a dreadful ability, which allows her to start turning her horrible life around. Warning you now: You will laugh at things you should not laugh at. And you will well up for things you probably shouldn't morn. I could not walk away from this book without giving it a 5/5 for performance. There is a scene in a bath house that will stick with you, if you pick this up.

Surprisingly an excellent find
There was one part of the story where it went from 1 to a 100 real quick and I was hooked. A very interesting take on necromancy and souls. I can't really say much more before spoiling anything. The only thing I can say I disliked was constantly hearing "I'm not a kid" and I had to keep reminding myself that we were all like that once to deal with it, but that's honestly a minor issue.
For what it's worth, I already bought and started on the 2nd book.

Could not stop listening.
I both loved and mildly dislike this book, both for the same reason. the story is so well written easy to follow and hard to stop following. excellent ideas and well presented. book 2 will be in my library shortly and I am already excited at the concept of more to come.

Quirky and Amazing
I love the awkwardly adorable personality the main character. Even as she explores her own progressively more monstrous nature she continues to be decidedly human in her needs and desires. The entire theme of the story follows along this vein. "Normal" society is revealed to be abnormal and occasionally monstrous in its own ways, while the author explores the relative humanity of decidedly "less than human" characters.

Awesome, upbeat and horrifying story
This book is very unique and tackles a lot of pretty complex issues in a good way. It is fun, funny, and entertaining, and even criticizes its own dark humor by showing how horrible those things really are.
This is one of those stories where the MC is sort of innocently a monster and deals with the moralityof such a thing by example and by showing the MC's thought processes.
Overall, this book was very well written, reached the rank of "UnPutDownable" for me, and I eagerly await any sequels. The reader does an amazing job with the emotions, tone, and pacing of all of the characters and adds a great deal to the experience.

How do I put this…
So a bunch of the reviews talk about how dark this story is. While there are minor details of gore, it’s not as gory or dark as some of the reviews make it seem. I like dark stories and the reviews are why I got this. However, it’s not that dark. Yeah you have a 16 year old girl talking about killing people and a few people dying here and there, but that’s pretty much it. When I hear dark.. I think of deep, gory, messed up things. This isn’t dark, it’s dim.
Don’t let that discourage purchasing this book though. The story is really good, and you get a lot of perspective on the characters and their development. I don’t like corny feel-good stuff, and book 1 isn’t like that. Definitely worth the purchase and was not disappointed in the slightest.

Teenager coming of age
If I wanted to read about some emo kid's problems, I would choose a book in the appropriate genre. This was supposed to be fantasy, but most of the book is about the teenage MC growing out of her immature personality.

Fun! When's the next one coming?
I took a chance and enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would. It was a nice change to have a MC way outside the norm of who "they'd cast" for a story like this ...AND to have her written by authors who understand what the perspective/thoughts of the character would be like. The rules/logic for how the world/magic functions also seems to be well thought out and coherent, though not yet fully explored. It'll be interesting to see where they go with it in the next novel.
The audio sample gives you a sense of the protagonist's character and the narrator's talent but, not a good sense of the story you're getting into. Maybe that's a good thing? I liked Jessica Almasy's narration enough that I even went even went to check out her other stuff. 'Very little overlap in what I'd normally be interested in listening to but, I see one or two I might try.

Starts slow but picks up banter
This book starts off a bit slow and threatens angst but when it finally got into dialogue the banter was great.
Overall this book has a similar feel to it as The Godkings Legacy series, but more comedy than action.
The narrator is decent in this but either lacks experience or drive to improve, maybe just has only heard other sub par narrators and not the ones who put their all into a book.
