Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Over the last decade, Britain has been rocked by a series of political revolts. The rise of national populism, the vote for Brexit, Boris Johnson's emphatic 2019 election victory, the fall of Labour's Red Wall, and the emergence of a very different brand of conservatism have all outflanked the country's liberal establishment and stunned the world. In trying to make sense of this remarkable churn and change, many commentators cling to very short-term and unconvincing explanations, pointing to social media, dark money, individual leaders, or the promises made to voters.

But, as acclaimed political scientist Matthew Goodwin reveals in this strikingly original study, this turbulence has been a long time in the making—and it is set to continue for many years to come. Embarking on a profound and wide-ranging analysis of postwar British politics, Goodwin shows how these revolts are all symptomatic of deeper shifts that are now rapidly reshaping our political world. He points to the rise of three new drivers over 'values', 'voice' and 'virtue', and shows how these uniquely powerful divides are now pushing us into a new era of political volatility.

Brahmin left expose

A well researched and well told explanation of how a shift in UK politics has resulted in a new quasi religious social class having and abusing institutional power over democracy.

The Book of Explanations in Current British Politics

Like many, I have been feeling an earthshaking shift in politics with many changes in outlook, direction, achievement, family and traditions, whether on the left or right.
Whether the reader is older university educated or not, Matthew Goodwin’s book explains very clearly to all readers what has caused this unrest.
Because of it’s important content, I am buying the hard copy for reference to the different topics presented.
A highly recommended book.

Lacks any real analysis or rigour

There are some interesting concepts but none of them are supported by any real analysis. This book tries to back up it's claims with references to frequent polling surveys or snippets of interviews without any context or exploration.

The definition of the target of the authors ire (the new elite) is loosely defined and fluid to meet a narrative. There is also an unchallenged assumption that politicians are only there to focus on fulfilling any opinion the electorate has, the example of the death penalty is repeated many times. There is also no attempt to explore the very real problems of globalisation instead it's just a given that anyone educated is a huge supported of 'hyper globalisation'.

I was hoping for a genuine attempt at understanding the current political landscape, instead I got a lazy book written for a very defined bubble in which I am sure any criticism will be dismissed as being from the 'new elite'.

Even though it's short, don't waste your time.

Important insights and clear evidence

Thanks very much. Deserves the widest circulation. A compelling, thoroughly researched and valuable appraisal of the UK’s broken politics. As a traditionalist, working class, Oxford graduate boomer, I for one am urgently looking for the stranglehold of this misguided new elite to be broken by the coming populist revolt in 2024. Mr Goodwin’s next book will be even more fascinating.

Whinge

This book misses the target of doing any actual research or delivering any meaningful analysis.

Mr. Goodwin regurgitates the results of lots of polls and really lets you know all of the %’s involved. The boogeyman he sets up (being non-racist people with degrees who may or may not live near london and who may or may not be white/British) is too nebulous to be meaningful and allows him to cherrypick who the guy guys and bad guys are.

This is brexit apologism and potentially a far-right dog whistle.

For a short book it is very repetitive. The quality of the narration is acceptable.

A MUST READ tour de force. Most important book on British politics if the last ten years.

A MUST READ tour de force. Brilliant, honest, sober analysis of modern Britain and the failings of its politics, politicians and ruling class. Shows how over 45 years we have arrived at the current mess. Gives voice to voiceless millions unrepresented in modern British institutions, political and cultural discourse, and stripped of cultural value. Says out loud what needs to be said. The most important book on British politics of the last ten years.

Brilliant assessment

Matt is able to put into words the gradual takeover of our major institutions by the new elite, people who think they are superior to the great ‘unwashed’ & who have little time for the opinions of people different to them, particularly in terms of education & professions.
