About this listen
Everybody knows about the transatlantic slave trade. A century before Britain became involved in this terrible business, whole villages and towns in England, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and other European countries were being depopulated by slavers, who transported the men, women, and children to Africa, where they were sold. This is the forgotten slave trade, one which saw over a million Christians forced into captivity in the Muslim world.
Starting with the practice of slavery in the ancient world, Simon Webb traces the history of slavery in Europe, showing that the numbers involved were vast and that the victims were often treated far more cruelly than black slaves in America and the Caribbean. Castration, used very occasionally against black slaves taken across the Atlantic, was routinely carried out on an industrial scale on European boys who were exported to Africa and the Middle East. Most people are aware that the English city of Bristol was a major center for the transatlantic slave trade in the eighteenth century, but hardly anyone knows that 1,000 years earlier it had been an important staging-post for the transfer of English slaves to Africa.
This book will forever change how you view the slave trade and show that many commonly held beliefs about this controversial subject are almost wholly inaccurate and mistaken.

An inconvenient part of History conveniently forgotten.
For years the history of Slavery has been narrowed to make you believe Britain and America were the sold purpertraof slavery.
This book is about the ignored history of the White slave trade controlled by Muslims which continued far after Britain fought to end slavery.
Listen to it, educate yourself and insist others do also!!

An excellent education in the history of slavery
Thank god for books like this. Prior to being educated with this excellent book, my understanding was limited to the modern black narrative that appears to own and identify most people’s perception of the modern slavery debate.
I hope this book goes some way in preventing the whole history of slavery from being forgotten and helps us understand that all races, creed and colour have been effected.

Should be mandatory in schools
An excellent and hugely informative and interesting book. Well narrated. Written by a scholar who certainly knows his stuff and how to present it.

Should be in every school and university!
I was both enthralled and confused. Enthralled that the history of slavery in Europe was so fascinating and I learned so much about the Ottomans and European history in a very clearLyn presented way. Confused that when I Googled to find out more about slavery nearly ALL links and images were to do with white people enslaving black people.. which is clearly only a small part of the history of slavery.

Concise eye opener
Well written, easy to follow, this book is a really a good listen. So much history about slavery existing in the early days of humankind and still happening nowadays. Will definitely listen to this book again.

A real eye opener.
A very factually delivered book with some fascinating stories. Well written and well delivered. Although not the aim of the book I would love to have had a little more material on the slaves of Ancient Greece and Rome, if only for context.

The truth
It’s refreshing to hear what actually happened in history rather than the false impression of history taught today.

Stuff I didn't know and wasn't taught in school
I was taught that white people are to blame for the slave trade. This book explains that religion was a huge part of the slave trade and that for the most part white European people's have been the main victims of slavery. Very interesting listen on a barbaric practise which shames humanity and religion regardless of the colour of your skin.
