About this listen

Ditching the stuffy hang-ups and benighted sexual traditionalism of the past is an unambiguously positive thing. The sexual revolution has liberated us to enjoy a heady mixture of erotic freedom and personal autonomy. Right?

Wrong, argues Louise Perry in her provocative new book. Although it would be neither possible nor desirable to turn the clock back to a world of pre-60s sexual mores, she argues that the amoral libertinism and callous disenchantment of liberal feminism and our contemporary hypersexualised culture represent more loss than gain. The main winners from a world of rough sex, hook-up culture, and ubiquitous porn–where anything goes and only consent matters–are a tiny minority of high-status men, not the women forced to accommodate the excesses of male lust. While dispensing sage advice to the generations paying the price for these excesses, she makes a passionate case for a new sexual culture built around dignity, virtue, and restraint.

This counter-cultural polemic from one of the most exciting young voices in contemporary feminism should be listened to by all men and women uneasy about the mindless orthodoxies of our ultra-liberal era.

A must-read for every woman

Full of uncomfortable truths but an absolutely essential read. I only wish I'd read it 20 years ago and saved myself from the misery of toxic hook-up culture.

Every Daughter Should Read This

A clear, articulate and thoughtful journey down the traps and pitfalls that life has to throw at our next generation. Wise words in an honest yet caring tone. I will encourage my daughter and son to read this when they are the appropriate age!

Profound and saddening

I’m a failed husband but I’m trying to be a good father, and look after my ex wife.

I found myself in tears listening to this. Wishing I had tried harder. Been better.

That’s not to say I’m taking all the blame but there’s so much I could have done better.

Every man should read this, even if they’re a good man. It reinforces that it’s right to be chivalrous, kind and enjoy the beauty of intimacy. Patience. Kindness. Courage. Gentility. Giving of time and energy.

Thank you, Louise. I hope many people read this. It is, in my view, essential reading.

fascinating

very engaging listen. Perry is undoubtedly brave in taking on liberal feminism which torches anything that opposes it. her analysis is much needed.

Superb - our generation needed to read this in our teens

As a 40 year old man, with a 10 year old son I don’t get to live with… this message hits home. I don’t know the answer as you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube… but I do know Louise makes me feel a lot happier knowing what’s going on and why. Better than the existential confusion I think a lot of us feel these days. Let’s hope our daughters and their daughters have it better in the years to come.

Commonsense and obvious yet groundbreaking

I got my "sex ed" mainly from my sisters cosmo and watching sex and the city, so can really relate to the feeling of being conned! I got the physical copy too, mainly cause I thought if I ever have daughters I would like them to stumble upon this book rather then a cosmo 😂 although some of it might not really be that appropriate for young girls (dead chicken bit for example 😣)

Post liberalism is here to stay.

First, the audiobook is great, Perry’s narration of the book is fantastic, she has a pleasant and calm voice.

The success of this book, I think, is that voices the concerns and feelings of the common woman in opposition to the proselytism of the elite ones, Perry being an elite woman herself has witnessed the horrors of sexual violence and that shapes her world view. Case in point, it is a matter of historical record that liberal thinkers have engaged with the most iliberal acts in human history and liberal feminists are no different, they just represent the interests of the nymphomaniac, social agitator middle class in the west at a great expense, namely the wellbeing of the rest of us. I truly celebrate this book, a liberal apostate delivering a massive blow to their hegemonic position, the tide is beginning to turn.
