On the brink of defeat, Hitler commissioned 10,000 V2s - ballistic rockets that carried a one-ton warhead at three times the speed of sound, which he believed would win the war.
Dr Rudi Graf who, along with his friend Werner von Braun, had once dreamt of sending a rocket to the moon, now finds himself in November 1944 in a bleak seaside town in Occupied Holland, launching V2s against London. No one understands the volatile, deadly machine better than Graf, but his disillusionment with the war leads to him being investigated for sabotage.
Kay Caton-Walsh, an officer in the WAAF, has experienced first-hand the horror of a V2 strike. When 160 Londoners, mostly women and children, are killed by a single missile, the government decides to send a team of WAAFs to newly-liberated Belgium in the hope of discovering the location of the launch sites. But not all the Germans have left, and Kay finds herself in mortal danger.
As the war reaches its desperate end, their twin stories play out, interlocked and separate, until their destinies are finally forced together.

Poor stuff full of rubbish
It seems that the trend to make a book longer by filling it with irrelevant twaddle has reached new heights here. I have always respected Robert Harris but not any more.... Long details about victims of the V2 attack are rubbish... do we have to know he was a 34 year old heating engineer etc etc etc. No. No more stuff like this please!

not as good as his other books
a bit too far fetched, the same characters always interacting with the same characters, kay and graf were bound to intercourse with each other before the end

Good story. well read.

Lightweight Harris
I am such a fan of Robert Harris and he's focussed on such an interesting little known truth about the Second World War. It's subtle and clever and I wouldn't have missed it, but it's not as rich as some of his other works.

Another wonderful book by Robert Harris.
An excellent listen. As high a standard as you’d expect from Robert Harris. Full of fascinating detail of the V2s themselves, Although this part may not be entertaining to all. I advise listeners to listen to the Very end of the acknowledgements as the most powerful punch is saved for last.

Superb Robert Harris
Robert Harris a master story teller combining fact and fiction, this story will keep the listener spell bound,the narration by David Rintoul provides a unique synergy between Harris and Rintoul bringing to life a fictional story that provides a great story leaving the Listener satisfied, but wanting more, I loved every minute of it, superb.

Bit underwhelming
I’ve read all Robert Harris’s books and I’m not saying this is dull but I kept waiting for something to happen.
In common with most male authors he isn’t that skilled at making female characters come alive - probably not PC to say that these days but I’d say the same about female writers and male characters, with the honorable exception of PD James and Insp Dalgliesh.
The main female character in this story was a bit bloodless and not very interesting despite David Rintoul’s best efforts. He’s an excellent narrator and did his upmost but she was charisma-free and needlessly enigmatic.
The cynicism of the Americans in luring Nazi rocket scientists like Von Braun with promises of the good life in New Mexico post-war and a space programme was well made, with few references to the hundreds (thousands?) of innocent Londoners killed by V2 rockets in the last months of the war.

Another 5 star
This is the third 5* book published on 15 September I have read and the umpteenth by Robert Harris.
He is a master story teller who manages to draw fascinating characters in compelling situations. If you have not read him before this is the perfect introduction. Just about the perfect novel.
I listened in part to the audiobook which was read magnificently.
