Story
When Hazel is given the chance to parachute into Nazi-occupied France, she seizes the opportunity to do more for the British war effort than file paperwork. Alongside her childhood friend, French-born Rose, she quickly rises up the ranks of the freedom fighters. For Rose, the Resistance is a link to her late husband, and a way to move forward without him. What starts out as helping downed airmen becomes a bigger cause when they meet Sophia, a German escapee and fierce critic of Hitler who is wanted by the Gestapo.

Story
She can’t recall what started her collection. Maybe it was in a fragment of conversation overheard as she cleaned a sink? Before long (as she dusted a sitting room or defrosted a fridge), she noticed people were telling her their stories. Perhaps they always had done, but now it is different, now the stories are reaching out to her and she gathers them to her. When Janice starts cleaning for Mrs B—a shrewd and tricksy woman in her 90s—she meets someone who wants to hear her story. But Janice is clear: she is the keeper of stories, she doesn’t have a story to tell.

Summary
From the bestselling author of The Last Correspondent comes the powerful story of three brave women who go to war - and end up fighting for their lives.
Sicily, 1943. Three American women, all nurses in the Medical Air Evacuation Transport Squadron, are determined to do all they can for their country. Vita is fun-loving, Dot shy and sweet-natured, and Evelyn practical and determined, but for all their differences, a life of military service pulls the three together as firm friends.
When they’re selected for a daring mission, the women are proud to play their part. But disaster strikes when their plane crash-lands behind enemy lines in occupied Albania. Together with twenty-three other medics, they find themselves trapped, cut off from all communication with the squadron, and in terrifying and unimaginable danger.
As days and nights pass without hope of rescue, the group must travel on foot across unfamiliar terrain thick with Nazis and their violent local allies. Can Evelyn, Vita, and Dot survive the perilous journey through enemy territory - and finally find their way home?

Almost there
An enjoyable read for sure. The main characters are well drawn and the story is compelling. The narration is top notch as well. But there are a couple of shortcomings that weaken the story. There are so many other characters aboard the crashed plane but they are completely ignored other than their numbers mentioned. Not even their names are mentioned other than the two nurses who go missing. With the length of time the survivors are together, this is definitely a weakness. Also, other than the leader of the partisans who rescue them, the other partisan characters are superfluous. These people gave their lives to help these Americans. Again, I found the lack of character development weakened the novel. And finally the ending lacks completion on two fronts: where did Evelyn and her family disappear to after landing in Albania and why did Dot wait 50 years? I still would recommend the book but I would have liked a bit of character development for the background people and the ending needs fleshing out.

???
I love the books. i love the characters. but in this particular one she completely left out whatever happened to one of the characters and how she got with or stayed with the guy that that particular character fell in love with. so there was no resolution to that at all. the character died before the end of the book anyway and then nobody ever knows what happened to her. not cool absolutely not cool. we should have been able to know did she go home and tell her mother off? what happened? did she get cut off from her family? how did she live? and why the hell didnt Dot go back to albania once the war was over to find her man? why wait 50 years??? dumb. I'm upset.

Terrific tale of love & survival
I’m a huge WW2 fiction reader, but wasn’t sure I’d like a “POW/romance” type of story.
I was very drawn in by the three heroines and grateful that one overcame her “paralyzing fear of life”.
The male characters are a hair away from being ancillary but still part of the journey in a way that is believable- as is the twists the journey takes.
Totally worth the read!

I enjoy love stories from WWII and this one was especially good. It is centered around three young women who joined the military to become nurses. It takes you through their training and the bond they quickly formed during nursing school. The already difficult job they had became quite perilous when the transport mission they were taking to pickup a large number of American soldiers was attacked midair by the Germans. The book tends to keep you on the edge of your chair. The author wrote a beautiful story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was humorous, suspenseful and tender. It was very well written and the narrative was very good. I highly recommend this book.
