Summary
How far will they go for family, friendship, and love?
Occupied France, 1940. When the staff at a field hospital draw straws to find out who will join the evacuation from Dunkirk, Nurse Cate is left behind. But when the Nazis arrive to claim prisoners of war, she takes her chance and flees into the night, taking one patient with her.
Fifty miles away, the surrendering soldiers of the Royal Norfolk Regiment are shot dead by the advancing Germans. Beneath the pile of bodies two men survive, crawling to the safety of a nearby farmhouse, where sisters Elise and Adelaide risk their lives to take them in. When Cate, too, arrives at their door with her injured soldier, the pressure mounts.
The sisters are risking everything to keep their visitors safe. But with the Nazis coming ever closer and relationships in the farmhouse intensifying, they must all question the sacrifices they are willing to make for the lives of others. How far will they go for family, friendship, and love?

I am shocked to know much of the story is true
The story kept my attention , it was gripping and awesome what the characters were able to do for each other, in so terrible circumstances.
The author really saved the best till last with Harry appearing out of the gloom, like a ghost.
Thanks for your research into a part of history which must be painful for many. And for bringing the story to life..

Utterly compelling
This beautifully researched novel was utterly compelling. It's heartbreaking to imagine what so many soldiers, nurses and French nationals endured through WW2 and that anyone survived the events of Dunkerque.

Great
I loved the story. I also appreciate the fact that there was no vulgarity & no explicit sex scenes. It was realistic with a good ending.

Humor!
I really enjoyed this one. So much dry humor and laugh out loud moments. A great story of generations of two families that own the Golden Hotel. Has time passed them by where people and should they sell or stay and renovate for the future generations? Great character development; some very quirky ones. I especially liked the grandparent generation; lots of humorous verbiage. Julia Whelan, a favorite, narrated the audio. She’s is always spot on!

Huge fan
I love all Soraya Lane books. WWII historical fiction is a favored genre of mine. I enjoy that all Ms. Lane’s books are based on true events with a bit of fiction mixed in. The narration of this book was good too. I listened at a 1.3 speed.

Breathtakingly Beautiful While Tragic
I loved this story in spite of the tears I shed while reading of yet another tragedy of World War Two. The characters were marvelously developed, the plot believable and the ending dramatic and gripping. I recommend it to all who wish to understand what the French and British suffered during the war and why we must always protect our European Allie’s and our fellow Americans from another war. In addition reading Ms. Lane’s book encouraged me to continue my Novel of the same period but taking place in an entirely different place and just before the start when Hitler invaded Poland. Watch for it this coming Spring, 2022. Sherdavidson.com

Ok
This book was ok for me, not great. Having all 3 main characters fall in love simultaneously in the middle of a war zone seems unrealistic. I love historical fiction but this was more like a romance novel, predictable and boring at times. I'm disappointed I wasted a credit.

Why
Do these historical novels that start with a great premise end in romance crap? The book would have been much better without it
