Summary

The gripping second installment of the Pelican Harbor series from USA Today best-selling author Colleen Coble! Police Chief Jane Hardy has only just been reunited with her long-lost son when she learns of an impending terror attack that threatens everything she holds dear.

A lie changed her world. Police Chief Jane Hardy is still reeling from the scandal that rocked her small-town department just as she took over for her retired father - the man who wrecked her life with one little lie. Now she’s finally been reunited with her presumed-dead 15-year-old son, Will, and his father, documentarian Reid Dixon.

When a murder aboard the Gulf Coast oil platform Zeus exposes an environmental terrorist’s plot to flood Mobile Bay with crude oil, Jane and Reid must put their feelings for each other aside and work together to prevent the looming sabotage.

When the terrorist puts Will’s life on the line, protecting him could be the common ground Jane and Reid need...until ghosts from the past threaten to ruin their fragile relationship for good.

Jane has plenty of reasons to run. But what if she stays?

Not for me!

Oh dear! I did it again. Don’t finish a book just because you’ve started!

It started with describing the main character as looking like Reece Witherspoon! I dislike that as much as photos on book covers. I want to picture my own characters, and her description didn’t match so that jarred with me. I really should have given up when he wanted to pull her into his lap! The number of books that say that! Why is it so shocking that women can walk and talk at the same time?! Sorry, I’m probably being horrid but this very short book has just taken 4 days to complete. I refer back to my first line.

not the best. not the worst.

not my favorite coble book, but I will purchase the 3rd and final one because it is intriguing enough to want to see how the story ends.

Suspense. Action. Love. Christ

I pray that Colleen Coble continues to write books like this, and I can't wait until #3 comes out in April 2021. This book hits all the marks for me, and I love that Ms. Coble works real relationship with Chris into the book without overpowering readers who may desire to have a story without it. What a great way to plant the seed!

Couldn’t stop listening

Colleen Coble is a master of suspense. In this book we dig a little deeper into Jane’s past life. Reid and Will are thriving in Pelican Harbor and want to be part of Jane’s present and future life. Why then does someone want to take all that way? You will hate having to pause this book for any reason.

Engaging

I have yet to find a Coble book I don’t like. Jane’s story is tragic and full of hope. She shows the inner power that women can posses despite our weaker and smaller physique. It highlights that Womens emotional are not a sign of weakness but our strength. This book also highlights the emotional side of men as we see Reed struggle with his feelings. I feel this book is break the culture narrative about gender roles and realizing that God created us perfectly to compliment one another spiritually. This book keeps me engaged as the build of suspense hooks you in. This is my 15th book of the Coble sets, and probably my favorite.

I wanted to love this book

I struggled with this book. Maybe if I had read it instead of listening to it on audible, I would have liked it better. On several occasions, I had to stop listening because I found the narration bothersome and some of the characters' actions unrealistic. I don't want to give spoilers, but parental decisions seemed strange. I felt myself thinking, "seriously--who would do that?"

The narration was good except, in my opinion, for Jane, the main character. I pictured her to be strong and have a take-charge personality, and the author stated as much several times. However, her voice came across as constantly uncertain, stressed, and maybe even whiny, not as if she was a strong woman figure. It was hard to listen to for extended amounts of time. I needed a break from her.

Overall, I like Colleen Coble's books. This series is the first I've listened to on audible and my least favorite. The two could be related.

Likable characters

I have enjoyed this series . This is the first time I have read/listened to this author. I read the read first book “One Little Lie”, and I listened to “Two Reasons to Run” . I have already downloaded “Three Missing Days”. The characters are very likable. There are nice twists and turns. I am looking forward to finishing the series to find out “the rest of the story”.
