Summary
The best-selling real life story of a hapless junior doctor, based on his columns written anonymously for the Telegraph.
If you're going to be ill, it's best to avoid the first Wednesday in August. This is the day when junior doctors graduate to their first placements and begin to face having to put into practice what they have spent the last six years learning.
Starting on the evening before he begins work as a doctor, this audiobook charts Max Pemberton's touching and funny journey through his first year in the NHS. Progressing from youthful idealism to frank bewilderment, Max realises how little his job is about 'saving people' and how much of his time is taken up by signing forms and trying to figure out all the important things no one has explained yet - for example, the crucial question of how to tell whether someone is dead or not.
Along the way, Max and his fellow fledgling doctors grapple with the complicated questions of life, love, mental health and how on earth to make time to do your laundry.
All Creatures Great and Small meets Bridget Jones's Diary - this is a humorous and accessible peek into a world which you'd normally need a medical degree to witness.

Annoying voice
Seems like a good book, but really hard to listen to. The narrator has a droning miserable voice which is very off-putting.

the narrators voice is just grating I can't listen to it. it's a shame because I have listened to few books like this.

Felt quite depressed
I always look forward to listening about the medical world, wish I had just read the book though as the narrators voice is so monotone and boring I couldn’t finish the book. Would recommend the book but certainly not the audible unless you want to feel depressed!

Worth a listen!
I enjoyed this book, the anecdotes are witty and cleverly written. The only thing that let it down a little bit was the narration. Whilst the narrators voice is pleasing to listen to the pacing leaves a lot to be desired. He barely takes a breath between the diary entries and the end of one sentence runs into the date for the next so it ends up feeling rushed and forced. Still liked it though.

Average but that depends
As someone who has worked in health for 10+ years I was really hoping to be engaged and surprised. After a few chapters one could get the sense of similarity in the stories and so it was easy to lose interest.
It maybe of greater value to those who work outside health and medicine specifically as it can call to attention the realities of the profession.

Disappointing and lacks punch
Not sure whether this was published before or after Adam Kay's This Is Going To Hurt but a couple of the diary entries are just far too similar and feels like someone copied someone else's homework. The narration is unconvincing and lacklustre and there is no real closure on any of the anecdotes. Sadly I persevered too long to be able to return the book but I probably won't bother finishing it. If only the narrator didn't sound quite so bored and disengaged it would help.

Great stories and honesty
I loved it, read a few reviews saying they didn’t like the narrators voice. Didn’t find it an issue myself - I’m here for a flat deadpan delivery!! Full of dark humour and and the behind the scenes stories that you will love if you like this sort of thing!

Compulsive listening
I listened to this book in a ‘oner’ it was so interesting. Follow Max’s first year on the wards as a junior doctor. He is overwhelmed, tired, sleep deprived, as well as having to sort out his friends love life. Highly Recommend.😊
