One by one, she undid each event, each decision, each choice. If Davy had remembered to put on a coat. If Seamie McGeown had not found himself alone on a dark street. If Michael Agnew had not walked through the door of the pub on a quiet night in February in his white shirt.

There is nothing special about the day Cushla meets Michael, a married man from Belfast, in the pub owned by her family. But here, love is never far from violence, and this encounter will change both of their lives forever.

As people get up each morning and go to work, school, church or the pub, the daily news rolls in of another car bomb exploded, another man beaten, killed or left for dead. In the class Cushla teaches, the vocabulary of seven-year-old children now includes phrases like ‘petrol bomb’ and ‘rubber bullets’. And as she is forced to tread lines she never thought she would cross, tensions in the town are escalating, threatening to destroy all she is working to hold together.

Tender and shocking, Trespasses is an unforgettable debut of people trying to live ordinary lives in extraordinary times.

Critic reviews

"A deeply impressive novel...[Kennedy] writes beautifully about love, awkward love, love between two people who the more censorious in our midst might say have no business being in love.... It feels true and honest, heartbreaking and tender...I love it." (Ronan Bennett)

'A compulsively readable love story." (Emma Donoghue)

"A beautiful, devastating novel." (Nick Hornby)

Heartbreaking

Amazing accuracy and very poignant. Belfast during the troubles, no exaggeration, no romanticism, a really brutal and real depiction of life.

Wonderful story, beautifully read

The troubles brought to life from the inside and with humanity. I know nothing of what it must’ve been like to live in Northern Ireland at that time, but with all the characters so relatable, maybe I can begin to imagine.

Loved this

So reminiscent of this era. Loved the plot, the voice that read and felt the anguish of the characters. Looked forward to each time I could shut myself off and listen to this story of love, loss and hope.

Extraordinary storytelling

Well crafted storyline that evokes these difficult times, a powerful reminder of how division debilitates on many levels.

Love in a Time of Troubles

This is a very powerful novel told in a relatively straightforward manner. A lovely catholic girl meets a middle class protestant lawyer and, guess what, they have an illicit affair. Cue much angst and fear shining a light back to the social, political, moral and sectarian attitudes of the seventies. Characterisation is a key strength of this novel as is the role of timing, coincidence and even fate. Despite the setting of a love story set amidst the trouble, I enjoyed it despite having a sense of dread as each 'page' turned.

Persevere with this

I really struggled to keep going but it was well worth it…….Probably for about 6 or 7 chapters. I learned a lot about living in the troubles which was eye opening having had university friends who lived through it at the time. The characters are excellent. The soft Irish brogue of the narrator needs careful listening so not great for late night dozing. But I certainly encourage you to persevere with it.
