Two Brits, George and Mark, set off from New York City to explore the back roads of America. In this calamity-ridden travel tale, George sets out in true clichéd fashion to discover the real America. Throw in plenty of run-ins with the police, rapidly dwindling finances, and Josephine - the worst car in the world - and you have all the ingredients for a classic American road trip. Story
Lisa and her husband Graham's hilarious trip saw them buying snacks from "voodoo vendors" in Taiwan, almost drowning off a Philippine beach, stumbling across "death porn" in Thailand and meeting The Bogeyman in a Pushkar restaurant. While abroad they contracted a serious case of travel seekness - an irresistible urge to go in search of places to be, people to see and strange stuff to eat - which compelled them to do World Heritage Shites in Egypt, evade Guinness-swigging swingers in a Dublin pub and fly to Cuba with a suspected terrorist.

Story
George Mahood had a nice, easy, comfortable life. He had a job, a house, a wife, and kids. But something was missing. He was stuck in a routine of working, changing nappies, and cleaning up cat sick. He felt like he was missing out on a lot of what the world had to offer. He then discovered that it was Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. The day after that was National Curmudgeon Day, and the day after that was Inane Answering Machine Message Day.

It ruined his supposedly normal holiday in Istanbul, made him curious, and began a quest to visit places everyone else is trying to escape from, and tourists don't normally go to. In this hilarious travel memoir, he'll enter a blizzard in China armed with only biscuits; pose as a scientist to sneak into Chernobyl; be chased by Croatian police boats en route to Liberland (the world's newest country); become a reluctant diving board star in a North Korean water park, and much more.

He’ll roll out his sleeping bag in Madrid’s red light district, nap on the streets of Monaco and furtively string up his hammock on Swiss farms. He’ll spontaneously teach English in Laos in exchange for rice. He’ll thumb rides anywhere from Timor to the Orange Free State. He’ll try smiling a lot, and see where it takes him. Most of the time it's somewhere good. As this collection of stories will reveal, it doesn’t always go smoothly.

Mystifyingly, 37.9 million visit England each year. Why? There’s basically nothing here. What are they looking for, and what do they find? Dom decides to try to find out. To do something he’d never considered before: to treat England as he would any other country. Surely there’s more to England than a slightly dull, green and pleasant land. Surely, it’s not just fish and chips, Shakespeare and the queen. Is it?

Summary
Knee-deep in a swamp in the depths of the Bolivian jungle, hunting for anacondas in a pair of sandals, it occurred to George that perhaps he should have booked that all-inclusive honeymoon to the Maldives after all.
Join George and Rachel on their hilarious journey through the wilds of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, as they climb volcanoes, fish for piranhas, trek through the Amazon rainforest, take death-defying bus rides, sample some of the continent’s strangest delicacies, and try to get to Machu Picchu. Armed only with a basic knowledge of Spanish, small backpacks, and bags of enthusiasm, they set off together on what promised to be a life-changing adventure.

review
This book is short and sweet. However, the book left me wanting more...more vivid descriptions of the sights and the sounds of South America. The descriptions left a lot to be desired. Only if you have actually visited these places would have any idea what the writer is actually talking about. Overall, it was a little disappointing. I didn't feel like I had been transported by the writer to this exciting continent.

Great Road Trip Book! Highly recommend!
We listened to this book while driving from Texas to Florida. Even my 20-year-old removed her earbuds and got caught up in the story. My husband read the book last year and read me several of the funny scenes. They were just as hilarious the second time hearing them. Excellent narration. Highly recommend!
