Summary

The plan is simple. George and Ben have three weeks to cycle 1,000 miles from the bottom of England to the top of Scotland. There's just one small problem - they have no bikes, no clothes, no food, and no money. Setting off in just a pair of Union Jack boxer shorts, they attempt to rely on the generosity of the British public for everything from food to accommodation, clothes to shoes, and bikes to beer.

During the most extraordinary of challenges, George and Ben scavenge through rubbish bins, search for the Loch Ness monster, wash dishes, clean hotels, sing Christmas carols for food, swim in lakes, descend Cornish hills on children's bikes, and cook a barbecue for 30 old people in a field. They spend the night in a greenhouse, a canal boat, a posh hotel, an empty house, a pub, a tent in a car park, and a barn with a bull.

Through the course of their hysterical journey, they are clothed, fed, and sheltered by the generous people of Britain.

Fall in love with Great Britain again!

This awakened my thirst for adventure and reminded me how wonderful the UK can be! Fun and easy listening as you explore the journey two guys took from Land's End to John O'Groats!

Good audio performance whiny story

The story is written in a very whiny manor and often I felt that the author was being a dickhead in how they whined and mocked people they met. The continuous snubs at gays and old people, who in many cases assisted them is a snub in the face. The reading was done superbly and was probably one of the only reasons I finished the book on Audio.

Top Notch Narrator

I read this book a few years back (my review below) and listened to it again as an audio book. So to update this is one of the best narrators I've heard, he does a fantastic job of the accents male female, drunk, Scottish or what ever, top notch!

So two guys travelled from lands end to John Groats relying on nothing but the generosity of the public. One of them wrote a book about it and some cheeky amazon reviewer had the cheek to say he wishes the book was free.

This was a very enjoyable book, I found myself laughing out loud many times at the reactions of the many people that George and Ben meet when they hear of their adventure. George doesn't go out of his way to glamourize his adventure and its all completely genuine, relatable and is a very heart warming and inspiring account of his and Ben's adventure.

Each chapter for each day of their adventure, you'll find yourself smiling at the telling's of the generosity of the people that these two guys meet, the hilarious characters that they meet and situations that they find themselves in.

SPOILER ALERT
One such example is when they meet a drunk in Carlisle who says they can stay at his cottage for the night. Who then claims to be a former hitman with exceptional gardening skills.

You'll laugh at the situations and how frustrated Ben and Geoege get with each other sometimes. Your heart will warm at the generosity of the British public. And you'll be inspired by the sheer will, effort and determination these two guys show.

This book has over 4000 reviews for a very good reason.

Highly recomended!

Mahood is on par with Bill Bryson, skillfully written, fantasist adventure, great mix of education and humor. Well done George!

Loved it--again

This is my second time reading, (well listening) to this book. my first listen was several years ago. I enjoyed the journey very much. This time I caught that the actual book has pictures. I will be looking for the book now. I really want to go to the Scottish Highlands now!

Hilarious tale

I loved this book, the story and narration both. There is no way I’d have the guts to travel like Ben and Gorge, but I laughed out loud hearing George recount their story and the shenanigans they get into on the journey from Lands End to John O Groats. A must read for any travelers planning an upcoming adventure!

What a Waist

9-10 hrs of wandering dribble. What a waist of time. The whole point of the book is captured in the last 3 minutes; all points of value, but why 10 hrs of wandering to make the point.
