In Made in America, Bryson de-mythologizes his native land, explaining how a dusty hamlet with neither woods nor holly became Hollywood, how the Wild West wasn't won, why Americans say 'lootenant' and 'Toosday', how Americans were eating junk food long before the word itself was cooked up, as well as exposing the true origins of the G-string, the original $64,000 question, and Dr Kellogg of cornflakes fame.

Ever since he can remember, Dom Joly has been fascinated by travel to odd places. In part this stems from a childhood spent in war-torn Lebanon, where instead of swapping marbles in the schoolyard, he had a shrapnel collection - the schoolboy currency of Beirut. Dom's upbringing was interspersed with terrifying days and nights spent hunkered in the family basement under Syrian rocket attack or coming across a pile of severed heads from a sectarian execution in the pine forests near his home.

Whilst in Ireland for an International Song Competition, Tony Hawks was amazed to see a hitch-hiker, trying to thumb a lift, but with a fridge. This seemed amazingly optimistic - his Irish friends, however thought nothing of it at all. 'I had clearly arrived in a country', writes Tony, 'where the qualifications for 'eccentric' involved a great deal more than that to which I had become used'. Two years pass but the fridge incident haunts our author.

Summary
Two Brits, George and Mark, set off from New York City to explore the back roads of America. In this calamity-ridden travel tale, George sets out in true clichéd fashion to discover the real America.
Throw in plenty of run-ins with the police, rapidly dwindling finances, and Josephine - the worst car in the world - and you have all the ingredients for a classic American road trip. Will George and Mark make it all the way to California?
And then there is Rachel, George's girlfriend, left back in England. Would travelling to the United States without her turn out to be the stupidest decision he had ever made?

America through the eyes of a Brit
I couldn't have loved this book more. It was an absolute joy to listen to.
I have listened to many travel books, mostly those of motorcycle travel, each of them have their own qualities about them and each their own level of "it was good but...". This book falls in with the few that do not come with that disclaimer. The story was well written, the narration was quite enjoyable and the accounts were well described. I'm a big fan of British humor, Mr. Mahood did well in broadcasting that in this book and it raised the enjoyment level for me all the same.
Despite all the noise that we hear from the media and social outlets at our disposal, it is nice to hear good words about America from someone who doesn't live here. He expressed his appreciation for what we have more so than many Americans do.
Each time I listen to a book like this it makes me yearn for a road trip. "Not Tonight Josephine" did nothing to quell that feeling and in fact inspired it more so. Thank you George. Thank you for visiting and seeing the beauty of America. I do hope you return someday, you missed so much more than you saw.

This book has given me a better perspective on a place I've been mired down in my whole life. It almost makes me want to buy a crap minivan and set off for the distant horizon.
