Summary

Now a milestone of unsolved true crime, the Hall-Mills case began in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1922 and lasted for over a decade. The killer has never been found, and the case continues to fascinate true-crime aficionados.

A bon vivant Episcopal minister, a not-so-virginal soprano in his choir. The wealthy wife. Her oddball brother. Their furtive maid. The snooping congregants. The bumbling detectives. And in the denouement, a trial, one of the more notable of America’s Jazz Age, covered by the likes of Damon Runyon, Dorothy Dix, and James Thurber. All of it hanging on the dramatic testimony of a single, strange witness of questionable veracity, a farmer the tabloids came to call "The Pig Woman." Almost everyone in this labyrinthine mystery had at least one secret, sometimes more, and the biggest one remains almost a hundred years later.

At Audible’s request, business and true crime journalist Bryan Burrough reopened the case, digging deep into records of the time. His narration in a warm Texas accent lends immediacy and intimacy to a classic New Jersey true crime, as listeners follow his reconstruction of the fateful double-murder…and the botched prosecution that became a national media circus in its day.

Intriguing

Very interesting. I wonder who the real culprits were? It would probably have been an open and shut case of it happened now.

Narration too fast

Narration too fast. Had to slow speed down as he read so quickly I couldn’t catch half of what he was saying.
Thank God this was a ‘freebie’. Awful!
As for the story…..boring!

New Brunswick, NJ, here's your audio....

If you love True Crime, here's a fast-paced investigation into the Hall-Mills double-murder. If you love New Brunswick, NJ (hi, home town!), this is the unsolved true crime for you. (Also? You've probably already listened to Dorothy Gilman's wonderful Mrs. Pollifax mystery series several times by now -- be honest.) Bryan Burrough embraces the story of Reverand Hall and Mrs. Mills with energy and a good eye for detail, and in his performance, he even pronounces "Buccleuch" correctly (i.e. the way New Brunswick does.) Click through to the author interview for more solid suggestions for True Crime listening, including titles *not* set in New Jersey -- enjoy!

Narrator talks like an Auctioneer

I read LOTS of true crime. I’ve read about this case before, but thought I’d give this book a try to see their take on the story. There’s too much info, a very confusing case with more than one trial, and dozens of witnesses. It’s quite confusing when it’s all shoved into a 2 hour book. I really like Audiobooks, but this one was just too confusing. Not sure if it was the writing , the narrator, or both. 2🌟 for effort.

Kinda interesting

I forgot I started listening and was able to easily pick up where I left. The story was ok, but no real conclusion as it seems the case was never solved.

Long Time with Still No Ending

What a difficult situation! Very good writing and narration. It sounds almost like a bad circus! So much involved, possibly, but nothing in concrete. A good read that I did enjoy (it seemed to go by fast), despite the subject matter. Thank you.

GOOD - COULD'VE BEEN BETTER

Good story that seemed to end too quickly, and became confusing towards the end. Nice narration, and I'm sure there will be plenty of fans. Grade: B

Til murder do us part

This book wasn't the best murder mystery that I ever read, but it wasn't the worst either. the story about this murder just seemed to be too rushed. I never got the chance to feel involved with the facts and the scenarios.
