About this listen

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The most famous true crime novel of all time "chills the blood and exercises the intelligence" (The New York Review of Books)—and haunted its author long after he finished writing it.

On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.

In one of the first non-fiction novels ever written, Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, generating both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy. In Cold Blood is a work that transcends its moment, yielding poignant insights into the nature of American violence.

Critic reviews

"The resulting chronicle is a masterpiece, agonizing, terrible, possessed, proof that the times, so surfeited with disasters, are still capable of tragedy." ( The New York Times Book Review)

Incredibly well-written and researched true crime

Capote poetically charts the convergence of the lives of both the victims and the perpetrators.

Stands the test of time

Despite the case being 60 years old and the original book written over 50 years ago, this stands the test of time. A really well written, well balanced story that doesn’t, in my opinion, feel like a story written so long ago. It is helped by a really excellent narrator. I would recommend this to anyone liking true crime.

Truman Capote's Great Work Brought To Life

Hearing Truman Capote's great work brought to life and listening to its being read, is superb.
Scott Bricks performance is excellent with the 'southern drawl' accent enriching the story.

This was a unique work at the time and Capote engages you and your attention never wavers. It makes you think deeply about the dreadful act of the murder of the Clutter family and equally of
the act of capital punishment.

An outstanding work so brilliantly performed.

Exploring new grounds

OK, so I am 77, retired and now reading for pleasure, exploring new ground. Classics, Crime, comedy, anything that grabs me but particularly exploring authors I have not ever tried. This, my first book by Truman Capote, has held me bound to the suspense, true, but also to the style of writing, description, vocabulary narration all to class. A fantastic analysis of a true grim crime and all that fed into the mindset of the perpetrators through their short lives, people with nothing left to lose.
This has exercised my mind and my thinking in so many direction. I look forward to finding more of Capote’s work.

engrossing

this is a tragic story, but expertly written, it gives a 360 degree view of a horrible murder, not in an sensationalist way, it seeks to tell the story from all angles and succeeds in every aspect, not sympathising with the murders just simply telling their story and gives the victims their story too, as do the investigators, the town folk, everyone is accounted for, this is a masterpiece I would highly recommend it

Excellent

I’ve seen both film versions and listening to it was just as enthralling.. Scott Bricks narration was pleasant and calm which just added to the whole listening experience.

Totally engrossing

I came to this book having read a few articles about Truman Capote, mainly linked to Harper Lee.
The narration was engaging pitch perfect and not dramatised, which gave the telling of the facts more impact.
I listen to audiobooks when I can't sleep but never once dropped off during this and usually had to listen to something else light afterwards to get back to sleep.
All of the characters come alive and the story is not sensationalised and doesn't need to be, as it is tragic enough. I couldn't wait to finish the book so that I could read more around the case and it's author.
I would recommend it whole heartedly.
