Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

AN AMAZING THRILLER FROM TERRY HAYES.

If, like Kane, you're a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again - by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide - and when to shoot.

But some places don't play by the rules. Some places are too dangerous, even for a man of Kane's experience. The badlands where the borders of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan meet are such a place - a place where violence is the only way to survive.

Kane travels there to exfiltrate a man with vital information for the safety of the West - but instead he meets an adversary who will take the world to the brink of extinction. A frightening, clever, vicious man with blood on his hands and vengeance in his heart...

I still dont know what to makes of this book.

Like many other reviewers, I’ve been anticipating Terry Hayes second book for a long time. I have to say that this is nowhere near the quality of ‘I am Pilgrim’ and I think the delay may be a reflection of how hard an act to follow that book is. It’s virtually impossible to define the genre of this one. Much of it just seems to be a sequence of ‘this happened and then this happened’ and so on, with very little clear direction of where it was going. It wasn’t until the submarine was introduced that I felt there was a story to tell. It was a good story but so much of the hours of preamble could have been condensed because it didn’t seem to add much to the main plot. It is well written and is a combination of science fiction and spy thriller. Perhaps someone will produce an abridged version focusing on one or the other. Jeff Harding’s narration is tolerable until he characterises females when, frankly, I’d like to punch him in the face! It’s not just this book, it’s any book he reads. He’s utterly clueless as to how women speak. Audible, you really need to pair him with a female voice actor.
Although I contemplated returning the book at several points, I’m glad I persevered and I would urge others to do the same.

Best book in 5 years

What a journey! Full of many unexpected twists and turns, fast paced, just brilliant. If you start listening, be prepared to get carried away for 30 hours of great writing.

Unexpected and interesting

I wasn’t sure of this book when I got to the middle of it, but I persevered. It was a really interesting read and I am glad that I stuck with it

Only review I’ve ever written

Could not put this down. Absolutely outstanding story. Plus narration by possibly the best “Geff Harding”. Loved it.

After ten years

I’ve waited patiently for this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it but I didn’t love it as I did Pilgrim. It’s not pilgrim (at all) and yes it goes off at a tangent but as I was reading I was guessing there’s more to the ‘sub technology’ than a mere tangent. I listened to a podcast interviewing him afterwards to understand why he went off at a tangent and sure enough he explained that this kind of ‘sub’ technology is already here. So whilst I did not enjoy ‘all’ of the book I did most of it. Was I disappointed? A little with the tangent but not as much as many reviews.

A great start that I lost all interest in

I loved I Am Pilgrim - it is a book I lent to anyone I could and we all agreed it was a fantastic story. So when I saw this, I bought it immediately.

It starts off strong, and continues to build on a great storyline, of a terrorist spectacular attack. Spy stuff, some clever thinking and slightly future tech - all great listening to, and where this author is at his best.

And then the time jump in an experimental submarine .... I genuinely thought this was going to be some kind of dream sequence and the character would wake up and get back on mission. He may well have - I can't say, as I gave up on the book. a world wide zombie apocalypse due to some space dust (I can't even remember the details) was such a jarring change of direction that I have up on the story and didn't finish the book, with about 5 hours left.

if I wanted zombie stories, I would listen to I am Legend. I cannot express how disappointed I was in the last 3rd of this book.

It lost me at time travel/dystopia

I started to like it until it turned into the time-travelling, zombie apocalypse thing. I had to skip a lot of it. Still, I like the character portrayals. It’s no I am Pilgrim but I’m sure many people will like it.
Nonetheless, TH IS a talented story-teller albeit not with a story to my taste
