Summary
A Sunday Times best seller
The thrilling first Dirk Pitt classic from multi-million-copy king of the adventure novel, Clive Cussler.
Fully armed and with all hands onboard, the nuclear submarine Starbuck sailed into the calm Pacific Ocean for sea trials - and vanished. No wreckage, no signals, no survivors: nothing...until ace maritime troubleshooter Dirk Pitt finds a single chilling clue in the shark-torn surf off Hawaii - the log of the Starbuck.
'Do not search for us, it can only end in vain....'
A crazed journal of madness and death is all that remains. And the captain's final scrawled, fear-crazed note locates the Starbuck's grave hundreds of miles from her last known position! The search for the Starbuck plunges Dirk Pitt into his most shattering assignment to date - a whirlpool of deep-sea mystery and terror - the Pacific Vortex!

brilliant!
I'd long avoided the Dirk Pitt novels - thinking they were all based at sea, generally the same sort of plot etc etc etc.
Well, I was very wrong, and I never should have doubted Clive Cussler.. Pacific Vortex was superb. A really intriguing plot line, some great characters, and a lead hero which I think I can really like.
I thoroughly recommend Pacific Vortex, and I'm looking forward to getting to grips with the rest of this series!
Great narration from Scott Brick.

Exciting but flawed.
Starts out with a sense of GREAT mystery. Who, why, how. Wow I thought, this is great. And it was.
Then it changed into a Jules Verneian / James Bond type story, complete with a "dated" view of the female characters and suspension of disbelief stretching action. The female - lets say melodrama was just baad! The action however was competent and the who, why, how mystery questions begged to be answered, so I kept listening.
Clive Cussler's almost apologetic foreword makes me believe that the series will improve. ;-)

Entertaining, but predictable
As always this was another top notch story from Clive Cussler. A very entertaining listen, with a bit of a predictable ending.

Meh!
Story was OK but not very believable. But I disliked it mainly because of all the clichéd macho bullshit.

too many "lucky" events
Boys own paper might like this story, I did not.
Too many times the hero survived impossible situations, a bit like Richard Hanney and his chums.
OK for light entertainment, but not interesting enough for a serious read by a grown up person.

Excruciatingly bad!
Cliches characters (shoulda known at ‘Dirk Pitt’), ludicrous plot, ridiculous dialogue! First and most definitely the last CC book for me! Best seller list?!
