Summary

Will’s journey from naïve apprentice to a mature wizard is almost complete, and his ever-growing mastery has reached unseen heights.

But his power does not exist in a vacuum. His rising star threatens to eclipse the existing powers and a new balance must be found, one that either accepts his primacy or extinguishes his light.

After Will’s resounding successes in the war with Darrow, the king plots to eliminate his young rival. Driven to desperation, Will is forced to negotiate for scraps between four brokers of power:

An ancient lich driven by vengeance, the fae queen—to whom all are just pawns in a deadly game, a nervous lord of Hell—because Will may have killed his predecessor, twice, and a primal beast—feared above all.

With mortal enemies as his allies, Will must survive to face the king...and the deadly secret he plans to unleash. Ancient foes have risen and the final battle has begun. With the world hanging in the balance, king and wizard clash, but only one can wear the Wizard’s Crown.

The author has become a lych!!!

I have really enjoyed this series until this last book. In the previous books the story built beautifully with twists and turns and proper cliff hangers. But in this last book it’s as though the author has changed! Why would you make characters act out of character with no explanation and no understanding? It’s as though the storyline is incomplete but it’s been published regardless. I don’t think there needs to be a ‘happy ending’ but the well thought out characters just seem to have been liquidised for no apparent reason. The whole thing seemed rushed and lacking in the fantastic storytelling we have become used to in this series.
I have to say I am totally disappointed. I had reread all the other books in the series ready for this last instalment but it fell so flat I feel genuinely surprised and saddened.
If you choose to read this be ready to be disappointed and frustrated. Such a shame.

What a mess!!

So disappointed! The ending broke my heart, affairs of the heart and firm friendships ending. Twist and turn as much as you will, but the previous formats had these relationships endure, no matter what. If this is the last book in this series, I frankly feel robbed of my emotional commitment to the last 4 books!! If you love Will, Selene et al; don't read it, you'll hate what happens!!

Wish I stopped reading after book 4

I don’t understand how M.g.M could have fumbled the bag with this book so much. I absolutely loved this series but this latest instalment seems to me that the author really couldn’t be bothered finishing it properly.

Not one single character in this book behaved like they had in any of the previous books, so many storylines started and left unfinshed and ambiguous.

Overall this book will leave you with a bitter bitter taste in your mouth after you finish.

Terrible last book to a wonderful series.

I shouldnt have read beyond book 4, this book just unraveled all the character building. Its like a completely different author wrote the book.

Oh dear

I’m a big fan on Michael Manning but this book was absolute drivel. It took a lot of will power to get through it, and is such a shame as I loved the rest of the series.

The dialog was weak, story very disjointed, everything miraculously planned out and a really frustrating ending with actions taken completely out of character to the decisions that you would expect from those characters based on choices in other books in the series.

I understand there is yet another book being added to this series, I really don’t know whether to waste my time on it; but remain hopeful based on the other books Michael has written that this is just a blip

Really disapointed

Loved the first four books but was really let down by this one. It just felt rushed and like everything had to go wrong just because it could. Don't think I will listen to any more of this author's books if they just gonna end up like this. Performance was also not the best with the constant name changing and other minor issues.

Hard to keep listening

I've got about 15 hours still to listen but I'm not sure I can. It's not the mispronounced name of the Queen but the blatant and sadistic killing by the main character. I'm really sorry, I'm all for complex characters but when they start commiting war crimes I start to dislike them. If I don't want the main character to win what is the point?

Change of names

The reader has changed Will’s voice and keeps calling Selene and his grandmother differently which is quite annoying
