Summary

Joey O'Callaghan was just 18 years old when he became a ghost - the youngest ever person to be signed up to the Witness Protection Programme.

Groomed into a drug gang from the age of 10, a cold-blooded assassination sickened him to his core, and he broke the golden bond of gangland silence. His evidence won murder convictions against two of the most violent drug bosses in Ireland. Relocated to England with a new identity, Joey had to face the world alone, and soon realised it was he who had received the life sentence. 15 years on, the ripple effects of the gunshots that rang out that night continue to leave a devastating legacy for everyone. None more so than Joey 'The Lips'. This is his story.

Critic reviews

"Gritty, terrifying and the most incredible true gangland story you will ever read. The Witness is hard to put down but will be harder to forget." (Donal Macintyre)

Explosive stuff! blows your mind mentally ………

Brave brave boy / man, This is no sugar coated dramatisation,( which I’m sure it probably is ) but let me say it captivated me from start to end, the gasps, sobs and shakes of my head were constant. This poor young lad trying to make a better life for himself and his take some strain of his “ma” who, by no choice had had it 😢 awful too.
Who would have thought that helping “ the milk man “ would have led to such a dramatic impact and change his life. This story is not about Joey feeling sorry for himself, but his survival that was thrust upon him in a “ gangland “ world.
He was let down so many times - my heart aches . In my mind I’m wishing him well and telling him how brave he was, and how sorry as a human being I am for him going through what he did,
It’s such a good book 📕 🎧

I had been told about this book but was unsure whether to get it or not. I'm speechless and angry that all this was happening to a child !!!
I was absolutely heartbroken by joeys story and so very happy that he is now able to be at peace within himself.
Good luck with the rest of your life

Harrowing read

While the story of this poor boys plight is quite distressing to read, I enjoyed the book, narration and overall performance. Wishing Joey happiness and peace x

Excellent

This book is one of those listens that only come around every so often. The story takes you into the thick of Irelands underground crime scene. I was hooked from the beginning to end.

Stunning

Gripping throughout, this memoir reads like a thriller. And what a story it is. After years of sickening abuse and betrayal at the hands of his criminal “mentor” Joey O’Callahan answered the call of his conscience and paid a terrible price. Beautifully read in a whispery, understated Dublin brogue by Charlie Kelly, “The Witness” brings to mind the equally brilliant “Say Nothing” but really is in a class by itself. One of the most moving crime memoirs I’ve ever read. Left me breathless.
